Fire Engulfs Patchogue Apartments

No injuries reported in blaze at Northwood Village senior apartment complex Friday afternoon.

A fire tore through multiple units of a senior apartment complex in Patchogue Friday afternoon.

The blaze at Northwood Village started shortly before 1 p.m. and took about an hour to get under control, according to Patchogue Fire Department Chief Joe Perry.

"The whole second floor was fully involved with flames coming out of the first four windows on the second floor," Perry said of the scene when firefighters arrived.

"No one was injured, thank God," Perry said, adding that the residents of the eight units in the building, which is located on Northwood Lane, had all made it out by the time fire crews arrived.

One resident who lives on the first floor of the building said an EMS worker banged on his door to alert him of the fire.

The Blue Point and Hagerman fire departments were called in to help fight the blaze and the North Patchogue Fire Department stood by at the Patchogue firehouse in case any other fire calls came in, Perry said.

Witnesses on the scene said the fire appeared to start on a balcony outside one of the second floor apartments. Once the flames reached the cockloft (or attic), the fire spread quickly the full length of the building, Perry said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
