Grand Opening of Gallery at 40 South

New art gallery opens on South Ocean Avenue.

A new, contemporary art gallery has opened up in Patchogue Village. Simply named “Gallery at 40 South,” after its location on 40 South Ocean Ave, a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a reception was held Saturday evening.

"We got our official Certificate of Occupancy to open up in April 2010 but we took our time to get everything taken care of. You have one chance to make a first impression. We wanted to get everything perfect,” said gallery co-owner Rachel Ferzola.

Dozens of people, including many local artists, flowed in and out of the venue throughout the evening to look at the artwork.

“We knew that the Village and the surrounding community were art-supportive so we want to be a venue that showcases local artists. We are especially interested in those that aren’t so conventional, who are more avant garde,” Ferzola said.

Co-owner and tattoo artist Joseph Ferzola had always dreamed of opening a gallery.

“I always wanted to own a gallery, to have a place that promoted art and got people interested in art,” Joseph Ferzola said.

Joseph Ferzola currently has 17 paintings on display through Feb. 15.

“[My work is] a little political. There is a lot of reflection of what we’re living in, what America is today. A lot of the stuff in the front is the finer artwork. As you head towards [the back of the gallery] it is more of my Japanese obsession which stems from tattooing,” Joseph Ferzola said.

“This is a great gallery opening. His work is very good, very different,” said Sharon Henson, co-owner of The Shoppe.

The exhibits will change monthly; the next opening reception is on Feb. 19. The gallery is currently only open on the weekends or by appointment.
