Local Music Highlights From Jan. 28-29

Ed Travers at Bella Vino. Big Daddy & the Bulldogs and Vitamin D at Kappler's. Chanteuse Lex Grey & the Urban Pioneers and Completely Unchained at Bobbique. Eric & the Secret Weapons, Nomad Jack, and Slammin' Doris at the Brick House Brewery.

On Friday night at Bella Vino, 23 South Ocean Avenue in Patchogue, Ed Travers burst in from the light snow, addressed the crowd as neighbors, and got right down to transforming the packed bar into a sing-along night of George Harrison, the ramblin' blues of Dan Hicks, Jimmy Buffett, the Grateful Dead, Ricky Nelson, and more. Travers effortlessly responds to the rise and fall of the crowd—a veteran showman—as he promised a tipping man, "I'll get the fondue next time," without dropping a beat.

Later on that night at , Chanteuse Lex Grey and the Urban Pioneers scintillated the crowd with their burlesque blues. Lex Grey, with Brooklyn attitude and theatrical intensity, crooned and gyrated on stage, the hard-hitting band behind her with a bawdy psychedelic punch.

Ending Friday night at the , Eric and the Secret Weapons kept the whole place singing and requesting for more. They played Zeppelin in honor of a woman’s birthday, endless Beatles tunes, Steve Miller, Frank Zappa—every classic rock favorite. Their secret weapon may be success, but it’s also humility, as frontman Eric told the crowd, “You make more money as a butcher.”

On Saturday night at Kappler’s Bar on Division Street, Big Daddy and the Bulldogs played for their ten-year anniversary. Their opening act Vitamin D, a raw blues band, started things off loud with Jefferson Airplane and Eric Clapton.

At Bobbique, Completely Unchained, a Van Halen tribute band played to the insanely packed bar of teased hair and top hats. However, it isn’t just the music of Van Halen. Completely Unchained revitalizes the very energy of the infamous band.

Two bands played at the Brick House on Saturday night. Nomad Jack opened with funky originals and covers by Rage Against the Machine, the Police, the Doors, Traffic, and Wings. They ended with “Be My Babymaker,” which the crowd had been begging for from the start. Slammin’ Doris, a band out of Oneonta, stormed the stage with their eclectically unceasing rhythms and massive creep rock sound.
