Local Music Scene Plays Brickhouse

Weekly open mic brings out local artists.

The Brick House Brewery is putting its money, heart and soul where Patchogue's mouth is.

With its professional Wednesday night open mic, the restaurant at 67 W. Main St. is supporting local musicians and hopes to put the village on the map as a cultural force.

Headed by local musician Kyle Fitzpatrick, open mic night at the Brickhouse has almost a year under its belt. Restaurant general manager Jim Skidmore said the weekly event encourages original music and welcomes all types of musicians to its stage.

"We're absolutely working on the future of the business and of Patchogue," Skidmore said. "They're two different things, but they're very much the same."

With a new sound system and its open disposition, open mic at the Brickhouse continues to draw hipsters, freaks, fishermen and families from all over the area to hear musicians from across the Island

"We're trying to get people inside and get the music going," Fitzpatrick said. "I'm happy with it."

Recently, Chris Cauley, who Fitzpatrick said used to run an open mic night at the restaurant, played with his sextet, the CPC Collective. His Sonic Youth-inspired, shoe gaze, noise rock set was in sharp contrast to singer/songwriter Adina, who brought her infectious acoustic sound and smile to the Brickhouse stage.

"It's my first time here," Adina said as several enthusiasts came by to congratulate her on an excellent set. "I thought it was really cool. The music scene out there is more like pay to play. There's no pressure here, so it's a great opportunity."

True James is responsible for the 'outstanding' events, but we have a whole host of wacky characters planning some interesting but perhaps not outstanding. the open mic nite presentation of Handel's messiah's Hallelujah Chorus of 12/15 and 12/22 - appearance by GF Handel himself expected!
