Fire Blazes Through Back of Medford Duplex
No injuries in fire as occupants just moved out, fire officials say.
A fire that began at the back of a Medford duplex on Jamaica Avenue Monday morning burned an area that included a recently vacated living area.
"When we first pulled up the fire was at the back of the house going up," said Bill Hart, 1st assistant chief with the Medford Fire Department.
Hart said that the fire started at approximately 8:42 a.m.
He said that the fire's cause is undetermined, and was under control by 9:14 a.m.
No one was injured in the fire. Hart said the former occupants of the home had just moved out.
The renters of the other side of the duplex declined comment.
In addition to the Medford Fire Department, the Medford Ambulance Company, North Patchogue Fire Department, Hagerman Fire Department and Coram Fire Department all responded to the scene.
Jamaica Avenue from Old Medford Avenue through North Ocean Avenue was closed to traffic during the fire and investigation.

if it requires this many fire dept's and manpower to put out a one room fire, than it is time to consolidate these districts into one and start saving taxpayers millions. duplication of services on LI is killing the middle class.

You obviously dont know what it takes to work a fire scene. Medford and North Patchogue more than likely worked the fire, Hagerman or Coram would stand by outside the building in case something goes wrong. When it does, everyone that can evacuates the building and the new team goes in. This way, they can account for who is trapped inside and then know exactly who is in there looking for them. The other department would be at Medford's main HQ on standby in case another call comes in.
Im sure your consolidation plan would look foolish when its your house on fire and your family in crisis and it take twice as long as it does now for someone to get to you. For me, the volunteers that risk their lives EVERYDAY to help people like you and me deserve every dollar I can afford to give them.
Support your local Fire Department, because when everyone else is running away from danger, they are running towards it.
