Patchogue Gay Couple First to Marry in NY State

Dee Smith and Kate Wrede to wed at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, the minute the same-sex marriage law comes into effect.

Patchogue couple Dee Smith, 25, and Kate Wrede, 21, will be the first gay couple in New York state to marry after a marriage equality bill was into law in June.

Their ceremony will start at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, the minute the law comes into effect.

“Everything just fell into place for us. We’re very lucky,” Smith said.

The couple met while working at the Knox Summer Camp three years ago, culminating in Smith’s proposal on May 5 during a sunset walk. She said the couple originally planned to wed out-of-state, plans that quickly changed following the passing of the law.

A rabbi will officiate the Jewish wedding, which Smith said will be as customary as possible.

"Obviously it's not traditional, but it's going to be all the things you'd have at a typical wedding for a Jewish couple," Smith said.

Their ceremony, according to Newsday, will be held at the Viana Hotel and Spa in Westbury, and catered by Mirabelle Private Events in Stony Brook. Approximately 100 guests will be attending, including Legis. Jon Cooper, D-Lloyd Harbor.

The cake is designed by the Carlos Bake Shop from the Cake Boss television show.

The Town of Brookhaven will begin marriage certificates to same-sex couples starting Sunday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
