Police: Patchogue Man Tried To Break Into Car

Pt. Jefferson Constables, Suffolk Police apprehend Jeffrey Edsall near Pt. Jeff LIRR station.

A Patchogue man was arrested Wednesday evening as he was allegedly trying to break into a vehicle in Port Jefferson, Suffolk County Police said.

According to police, Suffolk Police and members of the Port Jefferson Village Constables apprehended Jeffrey Edsall, 41. Constable George Gernhart was on patrol near the Pt. Jeff Long Island Railroad station when a passerby alerted him that a man appeared to be trying to break into a car parked south of the railroad station, police said.

Police said that Gernhart observed Edsall as was breaking the driver’s side window of a 2004 Mitsubishi Galant with a rock. The vehicle was parked inside a fenced area at G&B Collision on Railroad Ave. in Pt. Jefferson.

Gernhart along with Constable Dominic Messina and Constable Lt. John Borrero detained Edsall until Suffolk Police arrived on scene.

Edsall is charged with 4th Degree Criminal Mischief, Criminal Trespass and other outstanding warrants.
