Cops: Driver Flees Police, Three Arrested on Weapon, Drug Charges

Drunk driver runs red light, flees police in Patchogue, police say.

Three people were arrested on charges including weapon possession, driving while intoxicated and fleeing from police in Brookhaven after a driver ran a red light in Patchogue early Friday morning, police said.

According to police, officers attempted to pull over a 2003 Mitsubishi after it ran a red light on Montauk Highway at 3:15 a.m. The car did not stop, though, police said.

Police said officers saw an item thrown out of the vehicle as it was travelling in the area of Carman Boulevard and Montauk Highway in Brookhaven. After the vehicle went off-road at Old Stump Road and Montauk Highway, the driver and two passengers attempted to flee on foot but officers quickly apprehended them, police said.

Two semi-automatic handguns were found; one in the vehicle and one on the roadway, police said.

Darnell Lewis, 29, of Copiague, was the driver and faces charges of unlawfully fleeing an officer, resisting arrest, driving while intoxicated, as well as weapon and drug possession.

The two passengers, Michael Hernandez, 22, of Central Islip, and Mellody Williams, 21, of Wyandanch, were each charged with weapon possession. Hernandez is also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

All three will be held overnight Friday at the Fifth Precinct and are scheduled to arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday.
