Six Departments Battle Medford House Fire, Occupants Escape

A fire that officials said may have started in a backyard shed caused significant damage to a Medford home Thursday morning. 

Two people in the home on Acorn Avenue were able to escape the fire, which ignited around 11:45 a.m., according to Medford Fire Department Chief Willie Wyche.

Officials believe the fire started near the rear of the home's garage and the flames ripped through the roof, as well as causing damage to the kitchen and living room, Wyche said.

It took firefighters from six departments--including Medford, Holtsville, North Patchogue, Coram, Yaphank and Gordon Heights--nearly an hour to place the blaze under control.

The charred remains of items from the garage laid scattered on the driveway. The home's occupants were not available for comment. 

The Brookhaven fire marshal's office was on the scene to investigate the cause, which has yet to be determined. 

It's the in Medford this week.  A home on Ferrick Avenue was destroyed in a blaze late Monday night.
