Sound Off: Which Direct Flights Would You Like to See From MacArthur?
As the airport gets set to offer daily service to the nation's capital, where else would you like to see MacArthur fly direct?
Long Island MacArthur Airport will soon provide daily direct flights to Washington, D.C., according to a report in Newsday.
The story says US Airways is expected to announce Tuesday flights beginning on March 25 that will depart MacArthur at 6:20 a.m. and 7:49 a.m. daily, returning from Reagan National at 11:35 a.m. and 10 p.m. daily.
MacArthur officials have been upfront about their desires to attract new airlines to the Town of Islip airport. There have been recent rumors of JetBlue landing its wings at MacArthur. A few years ago, there was talk of Ireland-based Ryanair providing flights to Dublin from MacArthur, although that never came to fruition.
With that mind, let's hear from you. MacArthur will soon go to direct to the nation's capital. Where else would you like to see the airport fly on a daily basis? Which new cities might be enough for you to change your airport of choice?

Hi David,
As of now, that is true. The Federal Aviation Administration and U.S. Customs and Border Protection would need to sign off on allowing international flights. But Town and airport officials have been lobbying for them over the past year.

London would be amazing, but more realistically a non-stop to California would be great instead of my current stopovers in BWI or Chicago.

Direct to Fort Meyers. I used to take that flight all the time, but now there is always a layover. It's very frustrating to have to fly for 4 hours when it's only a 2 1/2 hour flight.

I would love to see MacArthur airport closed so that the traffic congestion ends and the danger of aircraft crashes in a highly populated residential area is eliminated as well as the dumping of jet fuel on the communities surrounding the airport ends and our children are not breathing in jet fuel and don't come in their homes from their back yards soaked in jet fuel. I would like to see the end of air travel except for emergencies and no air travel for "fun" and vacations. We need to stay in our own locales to boost our own economies rather than spend money elsewhere. There needs to be more local travel to our own beaches and more travel to the farms located right here for fresh vegetables and fruits.

Why not close ALL airports then? MacArthur Airport has come a long way and I appreciate the growth and the improvements they have made!

'We need to stay in our own locales'? Geez. Speak for yourself. :) Glad you're so content with not traveling off Long Island, but some of us have to when family/friends are scattered all over. I ALSO shop here and buy local produce - why can't one do both? Sitting for long frustrating hours in Long Island's traffic to get to any beach isn't remotely 'fun' so I end up in my own backyard. Preferable? For me, having direct flights (no stopovers) to: Tampa, Ft. Myers, Houston, Phoenix and any or all parts of California with pre-booked seats would make my life infinitely easier since I have physical disabilities and severe ear problems when making too many landings.

The only reason LIMA is going to resume flights to DC is because the newly elected Superisor has a home and a business there. You think that was a coincidence?

Scotty, I have flown all over the world when I was in the military and I have flown all over this country when I worked for several national corporations and all the flying was done out of Kennedy or LaGuardia with no problems. We do not need this airport and its expansions. It is just big trouble.

The airport has over 100 Full Time islip Town Employees and dozens of Islip Town consultants. All that waste with only 14 flighs a day. Give it up Tom Croci. Unless you can attract a major airline other than Southwest, your wasting Islips tax dollars. I would lease the airport to UPS, FED EX or another national frieght carrier. Let them deal with the rising costs. You wouldn't need 30 FT Firemen and 30 Custodians and Maintennce staff. Give it up. The Town should not bein the Airport business.

Mr. Matonti - I "assume" that your dislike for the airport comes from the notion that you live too close to it. Traffic congestion by MacArthur??? WHEN??? Try to get to JFK around 5PM if you want to talk about traffic congestion...Oh, I forgot; you want to eliminate almost all air travel- think of all of the people whose jobs you would be eliminating...I think you may have sniffed too much jet fuel.....

Halford, Traffic congestion on Friday at MacArthur at around 5PM is just as bad as JFK but let us keep the traffic congestion at JFK and LaGuardia and in the city where there is ample excellent public transportation and no congestion in Suffolk County where ther is no public transportation to speak of - absolutely none on Sundays and almost nonexistant the rest of the week. And yes, I would love to air travel totally eliminated as it has proven to be a danger to society the world over as evidenced by all the accidents and wars and hijackings and terrorism. And I have been soaked by jet fuel when visiting family near JFK and Laguardia that all jets dump on residential areas before making a landing as required by federal law to dump excess fuel and would like not to be soaked by it in Suffolk County. And all these jobs can easily be replaced by jobs on the ground using ground transporation and adequate public transportation in its place. Let's bring back trolley cars and electric buses and train travel and Greyhound and expand SCAT and have the Brookhaven jitney in every town in Suffolk. I think you are suffering from jet lag.
