Monday: Best Super Bowl Commercial
From the Doritos baby to Ferris Bueller, Super Bowl Sunday delivered plenty of laughs when it came to the commercial slate. But what ad reigned supreme? We asked readers. The top vote-getter: M&Ms "Just My Shell"
Reader comment: "My buddies brother wrote and directed the Happy Grad commercial. Pretty cool that it has been getting great feedback and was shot in one day on a shoe string budget comparing to the multi-million dollar productions it was against."- Big Joe
Tuesday: Should Religious Groups Be Exempt From Birth Control Mandate?
The Obama administration announced in January that it was moving forward with its new federal law mandating employers, including religious groups, to include birth control and other reproductive services in its health care coverage. We asked readers if religious institutions should be given an exemption to the birth control mandate. In a tight vote (53-46 percent), readers said no.
Reader comment: "The purpose of the law is to prevent employers from discriminating against their employees when it comes to health care options. Catholicism is seeking an exception in order to substitute Canon Law above the law of the land. Now imagine we were having this conversation about Sharia Law... Oy-ve!"- Rev. Kristian Baudler
Wednesday: Do You Support Cuomo's Pension Reform Plan?
The Daily News reported Tuesday that New York's unions are pushing back against Gov. Andrew Cuomo's plan for pension reform, which the governor says could save the state nearly $100 billion over the next 30 years. We asked readers if they support the plan, which includes raising the retirement age from 62 to 65 and offering new employees a 401k plan instead of a state pension. This vote was right down the middle; 50 percent said "Yes, pension reform is long overdue and this plan is a step in the right direction" and 49 percent said "No, I agree with the AFL-CIO; the plan is an attack on the middle class."
Reader comment: "It's hardly an attack on the middle class. It a help to the middle class who is saddled with funding these pensions with their taxes. I don't mind paying those good people a higher salary while they are actively working. I don't even mind paying for the lion's share of their healthcare costs while they are actively working. But I do mind paying for their retirement while I'm trying to pay for my own. Some of these folks go out with pensions that are larger than the salaries of those whose tax dollars pay for them. Mr, Trumka, I saw you and your people at the Occupy Wall Street epicenter. What happened to your support of the President's call for everyone to "pay their fair share"?"- AI 17
Thursday: Are Your Kids' Names Rising or Falling in Popularity?
BabyCenter, an online parenting network, has released its list of the top 100 baby names for 2011. We asked readers if their kids' names are rising or falling in popularity. By a margin of 63-31 percent, readers voted "falling."
Reader comment: "My son's name is Lucas and according to the history of his name from BabyCenter the number of babies with his name has increased dramatically. In 2004 when he was born it was ranked #51 and for 2012 it is ranked #8! I will say that I didn't pick his name for the popularity aspect of it. It's just a name I have always liked along with his middle name of Matthew. Lucas Matthew sounds very Biblical :-)"- Theresa Oakes
