Suffolk Planning Commission Comes to Patchogue

SCPC takes tour of recent Patchogue developments.

The Suffolk County Planning Commission (SCPC) held its first Patchogue meeting in ten years on Wednesday at .

David Calone, chairperson for the SCPC, said that the commission is typically involved in overseeing the planning process for developments in the region.

“We apply regional perspective for land use on individual projects, county concepts and bringing municipalities together,” Calone said.

Before the meeting, Patchogue Village Mayor Paul Pontieri gave the commission a tour of Patchogue, highlighting developments over the past decade such as Artspace Patchogue Lofts, the and the renovation of the .

During the meeting, Pontieri told a mini-history of Patchogue’s developments to the commission highlighting previous mayors that made decisions to preserve land and upgrade the sewer plant that have shaped the village.

“We have 43 muncipalities and they are all very different and there is a reason that Patchogue is being called a place of inspiration,” Calone said to Pontieri. “Our question for you is how do we bottle this and make something from the Patchogue renaissance touch other downtowns.”

The commission also discussed planned developments in Babylon and North Bellport, such as a proposed Brookhaven Village Square that would consist of retail and entertainment businesses for North Bellport.

SCPC’s next meeting will be held on June 1 at the Riverhead County Center Auditorium.
