O'Brien, Rignola, LaVelle win BOE seats.
The proposed $162 million 2012-13 school budget passed Tuesday with a vote of 1988-1402. Anthony O’Brien, Christine Rignola and William LaVelle officially won the three open Board of Education seats in the unopposed elections. LaVelle’s write-in opponent, Anthony Russo, received only 469 votes to LaVelle’s 1399. Also passing was proposition 2, 1730-1145, which will change future Board of Education elections to an “at large” format where the top vote getters will get spots instead of specific seat challenges. Proposition 3 passed 1756-1137 to allow previously approved funds to be used toward capital projects. Check back to Patch for updates on this website, through our Newsletter, on Facebook and Twitter.

Candidates, supporters gathered at The Oar on Tuesday evening.
Patchogue 2012 celebrated their sweeping victory The Oar restaurant in Patchogue Village on Tuesday evening. "Today showed that the people standing in front of me and the people out in the community have faith in who we are as people. This is a place that I love, a place that is what I am about and who I am," said re-elected Mayor Paul Pontieri in a speech after he won. An estimated 150 supporters joined Pontieri, re-elected trustees Jack Krieger and Lori Devlin, and newly elected trustee Tom Ferb. As the results came in, several began to cheer and applaud while many continued to anxiously and quietly wait. When it became clear that the entire team had won the crowd began to chant "Four More Years!." Devlin also thanked the party's …

Candidate Richard Evans says he supports Pontieri's win; hopes to volunteer in Patchogue.
Mayor candidate Richard Evans lost the Patchogue Village Mayor race Tuesday night to re-elected Mayor Paul Pontieri, but as the sole candidate running without trustee candidates he was glad to have had the chance to put out his message. "Coming into it I understood it was an uphill battle," Evans said. "I was running really late, I spent about maybe $700 in my campaign versus large large numbers, but I got to say the issues and I would hope to set an example maybe for some younger people." Evans said that he now possibly could get into volunteering in Patchogue and still hold to principles and issues that he campaigned for. Evans admits that he wasn't focused as much on getting the vote numbers up as he was on getting his message out, such…
The Residents First party addressed a crowd of supporters at Brick House Brewery Tuesday night after losing the mayoral and trustee election to Patchogue 2012.
As the results started coming in Tuesday night, things began to look bleak for the Residents First party and mayoral candidate Elisabeth McGuire. The sense of which way the community had voted came in early returns and it was a gap that Residents First was not able to overcome. The party left its headquarters at 57 E. Main St. and headed for the Brick House Brewery where they were met with a standing ovation, although the election did not go as hoped. The most talked about issue throughout the day - the Four Corners plan that calls for 291-rental units to be built - was addressed by McGuire after she addressed the assembled crowd. “I think there were a variety of factors that led to the voters' decision today,” she said. “I certainly …

An update on the number of votes cast as of the mid-afternoon and the issues that residents are talking about.
Voters were out across Patchogue to cast their ballots in the Mayor/Trustee election Tuesday afternoon. As of 3:15 p.m., 216 people had voted at the Patchogue Fire Department on Jennings Avenue. People shuffled in and out individually but the foot traffic was comparably less to that at the Van Guard Firehouse on Park Street, where 340 people had cast their ballots as of 3:45 p.m. Outside the polling station on Jennings, Elizabeth Bedell entered with clear intentions. She said she was voting for Mayor Paul Pontieri, who she said had “a plan and a vision for the future of Patchogue.” The 16-year resident also said that her decision to vote for Mayor Pontieri became much more clear after the debate at St. Joseph’s College on Thursday night. “…

Then there were comments that were made about Mrs. Rignola. Though I do not know her personally, I have done my homework and can tell you she is not a contractual teacher for this district . She has been a sub here for several years and knows the district very well. I highly doubt that she would be someone that the union would want to use to "stack" the board as you state. She had already run for …   more ›
