FAMILY SERVICE LEAGUE SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR ELDERLY ADVOCACY PROGRAM

HUNTINGTON, NY- April 18 2014- In recent years, the elderly population has significantly increased, especially among those 85 and older who depend on long-term care in institutions, such as nursing homes. Family Service League’s (FSL) Ombudsman program is a resident-focused advocacy program that ensures nursing and similar elder care facilities are providing proper care for its residents. Trained volunteers visit on a weekly basis making sure that patient needs are being met and that they are receiving the proper care and services necessary to maintain a dignified quality of life. To help accomplish the goals of this vital service, FSL is seeking volunteers for its Ombudsman Program in Suffolk County.

“Nursing homes, assisted living and similar extended care facilities should be a friendly, safe environment for our elderly population in need of care. Unfortunately, there are times when residents need a voice to make sure they are receiving proper care,” said Karen Boorshtein, president and CEO, FSL  “Our Ombudsman volunteers do just that , acting as advocates for senior citizens living in these facilities; and we are currently looking for volunteers interested in helping us be that voice.”

For those interested in making a difference in the lives of those who reside in Suffolk County’s long-term care facilities, FSL is offering a free training class beginning Tuesday, April 29th. For more information please call (631) 427-3700, ext. 240 or visit www.fsl-li.org.
