In the early morning hours of March 18, police say Mueller was driving his Jeep Grand Cherokee eastbound on Express Drive South in Medford when he apparently lost control of his vehicle and careered through the service road guard rail and into a stand of trees. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

When news of Mueller's death reached officials at the Sachem School District, they issued the following statement:

"The Sachem Central School District is saddened to hear about the loss of Kyle, one of our alumni. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."

Police are still investigating what might have caused the crash.
