Kali Chan Honored As Top Communications Professional

East Patchogue woman cited for her work as Director of Media Relations at Adelphi University.

Kali Chan, Director of Media Relations for Adelphi University, will be honored by the Long Island Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), at a special awards luncheon in Westbury, New York on June 15.

Presented annually, the Achievement Awards recognize the region’s most talented communications professionals and students. Entrants undergo rigorous judging by seasoned communicators from the Long Island business community.

The Achievement in Communications Award recognizes a Long Island communications professional who exhibits exceptional skill, enthusiasm and commitment to the field of business communications. With this award, IABC/LI honors an individual whose exemplary skills and talents make him or her a role model for business communicators on Long Island.

Kali Chan has been a public relations, communications, events, and marketing professional for more than 12 years.

She joined Adelphi University in 2005 and currently serves as director of media relations. As director, she is charged with developing, executing, and managing university-wide media relations activities for the eight schools, centers, and programs. Kali has garnered tremendous year-over-year growth in national and international media coverage for the university.

In addition to her media responsibilities, Kali serves as a contributor, editor, and photo editor of the university’s award-winning magazine. In this role, she finds creative ways to showcase the talents and achievements of Adelphi senior staff,faculty, students, and prominent alumni. She coordinates event photography and serves as art director for editorial photo shoots and campaigns.

She has mentored communications students and has successfully supported their applications to highly competitive graduate programs. Through her network, she has secured internships and full-time employment for those she has mentored.

In addition, Kali arranged for Adelphi’s Web Journalism classes to join in a partnership with Patch, an online news and information resource in more than 800 communities. PatchU provides communications students with the opportunity to gain multimedia journalism skills through hands-on reporting projects centered on producing news videos,blog posts, and digital photos under deadline conditions for Patch.com’s seasoned editors. This comprehensive journalism experience has the potential to lead to job opportunities for students.

Prior to Adelphi, Kali was the assistant director of communications and special events for Girl Scouts of Suffolk County,the largest youth-serving agency on Long Island. During her five years at the nonprofit, her responsibilities included public relations, marketing, special events, fundraising, graphic design, and photography. Early in her career, she served as the assistant to the executive director for the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce.

Kali is the recipient of a variety of recognitions for her placements or contributions to university publications, including a MarCom Award from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, Communicator Award from the International Academy of the Visual Arts, and Education Advertising Award from the Higher Education Marketing Report, to name a few. An active member in Public Relations Professionals of Long Island, Kali is slated to join the board of directors on June 14.

In addition to her impressive work history, Kali contributes her expertise to other organizations. She believes it’s important to give back and serves on the corporate committee for the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s walkathon called 'Girls Go the Distance'. The fundraiser provides programming opportunities that focus on all areas of health, fitness, nutrition, self-esteem, and relationships for young women.

Kali lives in East Patchogue, NY. She holds a B.S. degree in public affairs management from Indiana University in Bloomington.
