Near Blizzard Conditions Expected As Snow Blasts Area; Roads Treacherous

Road conditions are perilous, authorities warn.

A blast of near blizzard conditions is expected to blanket the area as night falls on Tuesday across the Long Island and New York region, making travel treacherous.

A winter storm warning has been declared for New York City and Long Island, according to the National Weather Service office at Upton.

The entire Long Island and New York City area is expected to be hit with between eight and 12 inches of snow, according to Joey Picca, meteorologist with the NWS, with snow falling at a rate of one to two inches per hour into the late evening on Tuesday.

With blowing snow, wind, and visibility down to about a quarter mile across the region, road conditions are treacherous, Picca said.

"The roads are getting pretty rough," he said. "If you don't have to travel, don't, and if you do, allow plenty of time and plenty of space between you and the car in front of you."

Moderate to heavy snow continued to fall Tuesday afternoon, southern portions of New York and southern Nassau and Suffolk Counties seeing higher accumulations Tuesday, and less snow in the northern and northwest area of the region.

Temperatures are expected to continue to slowly decrease Tuesday evening across New York City and Long Island, hovering in the mid to upper teens and dropping throughout the evening.

The wind chill at around 10 p.m. is expected to make it feel as thought temps are hovering around zero, and falling to subzero overnight.

While the heaviest snow is slated to taper off by early Wednesday, blowing snow and winds are expected to continue throughout the early morning hours.
