Photos: Historical Bike Tour Rides Through Village

The second Patchogue historical bicycle tour began at Shorefront Park and visited spots on the centennial historical bus tour guide.

The second historical bike ride through Patchogue was held on Sunday, starting at Shorefront Park and riding through the historic sections of Patchogue Village.

Maria Hendrickson, director of the Patchogue Village Parks and Recreation Department and Bill Hilton, village trustee and commissioner of special events, organized this year's bicycle ride.

"The bike route was taken from the centennial historical bus tour guide to the Village of Patchogue," Hilton said. "That was in 1993. We try to hit on some of the historical buildings and properties that we have."

Hendrickson said: "We take our bikers past the new home of the Recreation Center on 380 Bay Avenue. They also get to see where Patchogue-Medford Youth Services is, Village Hall, some of the historic homes, etc. We like to bring people together in a healthy way and encourage bike riding and exploring."

Nine-year-old Billy Dickhut, 11-year-old Samantha Dickhut and 7-year-old Vincent Scalzo participated for the first time and really enjoyed the ride with their families.

"I was talking to Bill [Hilton] in the back [of the group] and he was giving me all the background and the history of the route" Bill Dickhut Sr. said.

"It was nice" resident John Scalzo added. I grew up in this community; I've been here my whole life."

The bicycle ride is approximately two miles long.
