Locals Look To Beat The Heat

As temperatures neared the century mark, residents flock to Patchogue Beach Club.

Temperatures that neared 100 and that felt as high as 106 degrees Friday forced Patchogue residents to find ways to beat the heat.

Some went down to the Mascot Dock for crabbing and to enjoy the much cooler sea breeze, like resident Tammy Angelo with her kids Moreena and Robert.

"We brought lots of water, and we're basically just squirting ourselves with it to keep cool,” Angelo said.

Few others chose the docks as their place of refuge, but the swimming pool at the Patchogue Beach Club was a different story.

Staff workers Bruce Muro and Nick Kramer said the pool was “packed out” with patrons and that Maiden Lane was needed for extra parking.

Aside from the crowded pool it appeared that many residents opted to stay home and out of the heat. Patchogue’s Main Street was lacking in pedestrians and was desolate.

, across the street from pool saw no mass rush of people seeking relief in the form of flavored ice according to Tim Berdon, who works at the shop.

"Not many people came in today, but everyone who did has complained about the heat," Berdon said.

The high temperatures are not expected to let up Saturday. According to Weather.com, temperatures in Patchogue will remain in the 90s with a chance of thunderstorm in the evening.
