John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) was an American composer and conductor known particularly for American military and patriotic marches such as "The Star and Stripes Forever." Known as "the March King," John Philip Sousa played right here at the Patchogue Theatre on July 23, 1923 and a year later on June 23, 1924. Sousa and His Band was the most famous musical act world-wide for over 30 years. During his lifetime, Sousa composed 136 marches, 15 operettas, 70 songs and countless more musical scores that are still widely recognized to this day.

The 60 piece Patchogue Theatre Symphonic Band is structured very much like Sousa's original band and is conducted by Dr. Peter Boonshaft. Joining Dr. Boonshaft are many accomplished musicians that comprise the Patchogue Theatre Symphonic Band and they will be playing much of Sousa's unique music from the original scores. All will enjoy the familiar marches and many melodies that spark a patriotic note in any ones heart.

Dr. Boonshaft has been invited to speak or conduct in every state in the nation and around the world.  He is currently Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York,, as well as Conductor of the Hofstra University Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, and Director of the graduate wind conducting program.  He was Founder and Music Director of the Pennsylvania Youth Honors Concert Band and the Connecticut Valley Youth Wind Ensemble.  In addition, he was Music Director and Conductor of the Metropolitan Wind Symphony of Boston.

Dr. Boonshaft has been a consultant or recorded for Boosey & Hawkes Music Publishers, Warner Brothers Publications, Southern Music Publishers, Kendor Music Publishers, Daehn Publications and C. Allen Music. He has received official proclamations from the Governors of four states and a Certificate of Appreciation from former President Ronald Reagan, as well as performing for former President and Mrs. George Bush, former President Bill Clinton, and for Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.  His honors also include being selected three times as a National Endowment for the Arts "Artist in Residence," three times awarded Honorary Life Membership in the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and being selected for the Center for Scholarly Research and Academic Excellence at Hofstra University.
