Background: Originally from Shemlan, Lebanon, she and her family left due to civil war in the country and moved to Conneticut when she was 13. Abadjian said that her home country and war have had a large effect on the art she creates. She and her recently married husband, Mark Kessel, are expecting a baby boy in about three months. Aside from her new baby, Abadjian plans to continue painting and networking with artists on Long Island and New York City.

Talent: Abadjian has also been painting since she was 13, and while she has not been back to Lebanon since 2005, the country and its war-torn state have served as an inspiration to several of her works. During the interview, she was working on an image of an anthromorphic lamb that was playing with an unexploded bomb it mistook for a ball.

"Nobody likes war, but for me it becomes personal," Abadjian said.

Q & A

Patch: What drew you to Artspace?

I came to Artspace, because I thought it would be a good idea to live among a community of artists.

Patch: What benefits have you found by living in an artist community?

It's inspirational to be able to exchange creative ideas, collaborate with fellow artists, as well as put together exhibitions. Living here has many advantages including the ability to show, promote and sell our artwork.

PatchWhat is your favorite aspect of living in the Patchogue area?

My favorite aspect of living in Patchogue Village is that we live in a lively little city, and that we are conveniently located near the train station, the beach, the library, restaurants and various little shops. It's a fun place to call home.
