Music Beat: Kaitlyn Poli

Kaitlyn Poli is a 12-year-old singer from Farmingville who has been performing around Long Island. Coming up for Poli is a free performance at Patchogue’s 89 North Music Venue, 89 North Ocean in Patchogue, with School of Rock on Sunday. According to the venue’s website, doors open for the show from 12 p.m.-4 p.m. Poli talked with Patch about her music, performing and her upcoming recording in Tennessee.

Patch: What are the names of the members of your band (if applicable, if solo just for yourself) and what are their hometowns?

Kaitlyn Poli: I do not have a band as of right now. I did at one point over the summer and the name was White Rock Escape. We did a few shows at the Brookhaven Fair this year and it was a lot of fun. Unfortunately we do not live close together and traveling for rehearsals was an issue. So right now its just me, Kaitlyn Poli. I live in Farmingville, NY. I am 12 years old and I have been singing for about 3 years now. I attend the School of Rock Port Jeff. We have concerts every few months at local venues such as 89 North and Off Key Tiki just to name a few.

Patch: How would you describe your sound?

Poli: I’m not really sure how to answer this because I love to experiment with all different types of music. At the SOR we are able to pick our own show that we want to do. Usually I get to choose out of about five or six different genres of music. I love and have done shows like Funk and Reggae, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and I am currently getting ready to do shows in September on Ska, Punk and Other Junk and for the fall shows I signed up for the Rush Show.  I have written a few songs of my own which can be found on my Youtube Channel. When I write my songs and I think about the lyrics and music and I honestly try not to sound like everyone else, a pop song that talks about little girl crushes and stuff. I want my music to be unique but something that people can relate to.  

Patch: What are your performances usually like?

Poli: I guess my performances you can say are energetic?? When I am on stage I love to have fun, and since I perform a lot with the SOR I have an incredible band behind me. We all love what we do so it makes it that much more fun. Everyone really just gets on stage and gives it everything they got. It’s so much fun with them. There are times when I perform by myself without the SOR such as fundraisers, contests, ect. I usually use a karaoke backing which is kinda weird for me since I’m so used to performing with a band but I still love it!!! I make the best of what I have and do the best I can.

Patch: What is your next big thing coming up?

Poli: I have a few big things that just passed. I was recently asked to perform at a Sarcoidosis Fundraiser in Centereach (i had two of my friends sing with me) , I was invited back to perform at Farmingville's 2nd Annual Street this year. I asked my friend who is also a singer at the SOR Juliette Walcott to perform with me. It was a lot of fun and there were more people than last year. The DJ that was running the performances liked us a lot and asked if we could come back on at another time slot. I have a School of Rock Concert coming up on September 15th at 89 North Music Venue in Patchogue. Both performances start at 2pm!! I am also involved in an organization called Tunes For Tots started by Jason Shockey. In this organization I perform as well as a group of other young talented singers/musicians to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation. We have our first NY DREAM TEAM show in NYC on November 10th at THE BITTER END, 2 p.m.-7 p.m. Please come and help us support such a great cause!!! We are in the middle of trying to set up Mall Tours here on the Island for the Tunes For Tots and Make a Wish foundation so please keep a look out. I am also going to NASHVILLE, TN to record and do a music video with my manager TAYLOR MORRISON of Taylor Morrison Music also in November.

Patch: What has your experience been like working on the current EP?

Poli: I haven't started working on an EP yet. My first professional recording will be at the end of November when I go to Nashville and record. I don't have all the professional equipment yet at my home to really record high quality tracks yet. My parents don't make a lot and recording equipment is expensive but they are helping and buy recording equipment as they can. My aunt and I do all of my non live videos (she does all my videos lol) on her Mac with iMovie and I do have a good recording mic and filter. I am hopeful one day that I will have all the equipment I need to make professional quality tracks and eventually an EP.
