Music Beat: Patchogue's "Funknasty" Releasing Album Saturday

Q&A with member of the band.

Patch recently visited and spoke with Patchogue band, “Funknasty,” who will be putting out their next album on May 11. The band is a group of energetic guys, who kept making music of some kind while Patch took their photo. Guitar and vocalist Anthony “Werpleman” Cavuoto spoke with Patch about the band:

Patch: What are the names of the members of the band and what are their hometowns?

Cavuoto: Funknasty is a band of Patchogue Medford locals. Justin "Skizzy" Clark on guitar, Josh "JpS" Smith on drums, Ed "Old Kid" Nevin on the bass, Joe Abdat on the hype, and Anthony "Werpleman" Cavuoto on guitar and vocals. We all met through school (Patchogue-Medford School District) but became good friends by seeing the same bands out in the bar scene and partying together.

Patch: How would you describe your sound?

Cavuoto: Funknasty's sound is very off the wall. Our repertoire is very extensive and filled with a little bit of something for everybody. We can start off a set with a pop sound then transform it into a raunchy funk riff rock tune and then play some epic jam band symphonies that have the danceability for the casual bar going listener and the technical style for the music enthusiast. The key to our writing our music and creating the "Funknasty" sound comes from how different we all are as players but still have the ability to maintain in depth humorous conversations musically on stage.

Patch: What are your performances usually like?

Cavuoto: Loud and intimate. We pride ourselves with having a different show every time we hit the stage. Whether its bringing a piñata filled with airplane bottles of liquor, dressing up in costumes, shooting off confetti cannons, or having the audience storm the stage and dance right next to us, our live performance has and will always be the strong suite of this band, we never fail to bring the party. At our shows you can expect to see a lot of sweaty party monsters dancing about singing our songs with us, we are blessed to have the best fans in the world. After people hear us play once they go to every show helping us pack out every venue we play at providing a great environment to loose yourself in the music. You will also find a very diverse crowd at our shows everything from hippies to metal heads and young festival goers to the older music enthusiasts.

Patch: What is the future for the group, and what has your experience been like working on the current album?

Cavuoto: For right now as a group we have been gigging hard for the past few months all over NY from the island to upstate at everything from festivals and dive bars in the city to fundraisers and house parties; but now that we have completed our album we are going to start focusing on pushing that to as many people as we can whether it be on Spotify or iTunes or by word of mouth and hand. The album "Now That's What I Call Naaaaasty" has 12 of our original songs which consists of both instrumentals and songs with catchy lyrics that will keep you singing along every time you play the disc. We learned a lot about ourselves and definitely tightened up our sound while we were working on the album. We have a lot of great gigs coming up and several more in the works such as the Great South Bay Music Festival in Patchogue at the end of July which will be featuring bands like Soulive and The Doobie Brothers. The way our work ethic and growth has been over the past few months we are going to try and get our show on the road by at least this time next year. But as far as shows are concerned our most important coming up is this Saturday, May 11th at O'Briens in Coram on 112. That will be when we will officially debut our album along with two other great Patchogue bands; Darby Switch and The Corduroy Sky. We will also be having the United Ink girls there making an appearance to help us with our merchandise and promotions for an event we will be doing with them at Nassau Coliseum in the beginning of June.
