"The Essence of Fire Island" on Display at Patchogue Ferry Terminal

Exhibition will be on display through August. 5.

The Patchogue-Watch Hill Ferry terminal, at 150 West Avenue in Patchogue, recently opened its doors to a Fire Island theme photo exhibition on June 28.

Put on by the Friends of Fire Island National Sea Shore and the Nature and Wildlife Photographers of Long Island (NWPLI), the display can be viewed throughout the summer on weekends through August 5.

“We put this display together as a way to educate people and open their eyes to what’s going on around Long Island,” NWPLI president Tom Pfeifer said. “These are all Fire Island based images that are here and it serves as a fund raiser – any sales from anything here, a percentage gets kicked back to them.”

The opening of the display featured members of both the NWPLI and Friends of Fire Island presenting photography to the public.

“We’ve been doing it for the past couple of years and it’s very successful,” Friends of Fire Island president Dave Hensen said. “It’s a good partnership and the money raised goes to support our efforts.”

The two groups got together for a similar event at the opening of the ferry terminal last May, according to Pfeifer.

Overall it is a nearly perfect match for each group to get recognition and help raise money for their causes.

“We try to help out where we can and give back to the Island,” Pfeifer said. “A lot of us photograph almost exclusively on Long Island and it opens people’s eyes to what is here and what they may not see.”
