(Update) Police: Man Dies, 3 Injured In North Ocean Ave Crash

Two adults seriously injured, one child sustains non-life-threatening injuries in Saturday evening crash, police say.

A man died and three people, including a 13-month-old child, were injured Saturday evening in a two-car crash on North Ocean Avenue just north of Shaber Road in North Patchogue, Suffolk County Police said.

According to police, John Bertuzzi, 72 of Middle Island, was driving a 2008 Kia northbound on North Ocean Avenue when he crossed over into the southbound lane near the Shaber Road intersection. The vehicle then struck a 2010 Volkswagon being driven by Louise Cervelli, 32 of Coram, at 5:29 p.m. Police said one of the cars crashed into a car port after the initial crash.

Bertuzzi was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center (BMH) in East Patchogue via North Patchogue Fire Department Ambulance, where he was pronounced dead. Cervelli was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital by Suffolk County Police helicopter in serious condition. Her husband Garrett Cervelli, 35, and their 13-month-old son were also taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center by the ambulance. Garrett Cervelli is being treated for internal injuries and the child was treated and released for minor injuries, police said.

Police are currently investigating the incident, including the possibility of whether a medical condition may have contributed to the cause of the crash. Both cars will be impounded for safety checks. Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
