Goldberg’s Famous Bagels Brings Family Business To Patchogue

Goldberg’s Famous Bagels opened at 85 E. Main St. in Patchogue Village in November, and owner Howard Goldberg is in the third generation of the five within his family’s business.

Goldberg is from Patchogue, and said the idea to open a location came while he was driving back and forth to Southampton.

“There is a need for a quality deli on Main Street [where people] can come in, grab a sandwich and get back to their offices,” Goldberg said. Other Long Island locations of the business are in Montauk, East Hampton and Southampton. There are also New Jersey locations.

Goldberg said he met with Mayor Paul Pontieri, who suggested to bring the bagel brand to Patchogue.

Each location is owned and operated by a relative of the family, and the bagels are made “the old fashioned way” with a family recipe on-site.

He said the goal is not just to bring the brand to Patchogue, but also to introduce the brand’s “flagels”, a flatter and crispier bagel, which they are most known for.

Goldberg said there was also a need for baked goods, and hired a pastry chef to make muffins, brownies and other similar items. He is also dedicating a section of the counter for fresh salads, and a grill.

“In meeting with the Mayor and the realtor for the building, they asked if I was going to carry corned beef and pastrami, and I was unsure,” Goldberg said. He said he followed their advice, put in a steam table for the items and that its been an early success.

Goldberg described renovation of the location, which was formerly a computer store, as extensive. All new electric, plumbing, air conditioning, an architect’s design for facilitating customers, coffee area and equipment were all a part of getting the store ready.

“This is the new design of the store, is to get away from the traditional bright lights, hardwood floors and upgrade to space lighting, porcelain floors throughout the store, as well as our sophisticated menu boards,” Goldberg said.

Goldberg said customers’ reactions are what is ultimately used to evaluate how locations are performing.

“The way we judge a store is that we always want to know if the people left happy,” Goldberg said. “This store we actually felt that when the people left they left happier.”

He also said that the store will make anything, and will accept any requests.
