King Kullen SVP: Patchogue Store Is Closing

Store to close after the first of the year.

Patchogue location of King Kullen.

The Patchogue location of King Kullen, at 499 N. Service Rd. in the Gateway Plaza Shopping Center, will be closing in 2014.

Joseph Brown, senior vice president of the grocery chain, told Patch Friday that the location is closing "sometime after the first of the year."

Brown said the location is closing because the terms of lease have come to an end and the company is choosing not to renew. This is the same reason a West Islip location of King Kullen is also closing

Brown said that the company plans to offer employees similar positions at other stores at the same rate of pay and employment status.

Patch has asked Brown about the number of employees at the Patchogue store and will update should we hear back.

What are your thoughts on the closing of this King Kullen location? What do you want to see possible replace it? Talk about it in the comments below this story.

This area needs some sort of a grocery store for residents on this side of Sunrise Hwy. It is very inconvenient to have to go to Waldbaums on the other side of the highway. I hope Walmarts does not come into this area. The new Target just down the road will already be impacting area roads with lots of congestion. A Walmarts store will just push the road congestion over the edge. Too bad, I liked the smallness of this store, instead of having to run all over an over-sized store full of junk.

Cheap Johns?
annette kattau December 07, 2013 at 08:56 AM
No it does not mean Walmart is toast don't you all get it...Start attending town board and planning board meetings and watch their smooth lawyers smooze and joke with everyone on these boards....David Slaone and Tim Shea....time to get active and have a say in whats going on...there is no room for much more apathy..Cheap Johns omg we don't have enough garbage dollar stores..these are what bring an area down....set your sites......

Annette, You got that right. I am appalled by the cozy relationships. Sloan predates even the Crookhaven days and is involved in every major variance that would normally be denied. He did it for Gateway destroying a watershed into GSB. Has been doing this for decades. No DA investigations.....ever.....they are all one.
Richard Kemp December 07, 2013 at 01:38 PM
King Kullen was never very busy in my opinion. A Walmart will be a welcome addition. The Walmart in Islandia is a booming buisness that attracts people from all over. I'm tired of hearing support our local Mom and Pop stores with prices up to the moon. What have they ever done for the general public?? and by the way P.S. I thought the DA was involved with Criminal Activities, like theft, murder, I would have thought Patchogue would have been investigated after the serious accusations by S.McGiff. It appears that the Dictator did not persue any legal defense to McGiff's Accusations.
Patchogue Snoop December 07, 2013 at 04:35 PM
No, the Suffolk DA is in part in charge of govt corruption check the phone book, call the number and ask. Also, state AG. think about it..... Mayor PP was at first loved by all, tons of pics in every paper of how he revived Patchogue...tons of hacks in those pics taking credit for essentially the largest real estate boom in our countries history and a booming economy under Bush. Very easy to connect those dots. Back room sewer deals with Hack Brian Foley and even higher up the hack chain. Those accusations by McGiff were proven beyond any doubt. He could not sue McGiff for what was true. PP ran for his life just like a petty thief does. He committed larceny, fraud(phoney expense and gas receipts, sold his personal truck to the Village for far more than it was worth laundering it thru his cousins dealership....imagine that!! Just so this greedy creep could make a thousand dollars!!!) Broke state laws lending tax levy money to a developer just because he wanted to....but the truth.....check who owned those slum homes that previously occupied FART SPACE, how much was paid for them....ditto for the work force village. Insane money for slum homes owned by friends and relatives of Mayor PP. This was highly publicized at the time but I guess no one bothered paying attention. The dictator has made more high dollar patronage appointments than any other mayor, incompetent hacks, one of which is our clerk, EX Trustee Seal who quit to avoid big trouble, who is the reason for many of the criticisms in the State Audit Report. Yep, still there. Another hack is in PPs newly created position of Superintendent of Public Works. Ex school janitor. now earning 100k a year plus a car!!!! And guess what car that is.......MAYOR PPs laundered 1994 ford explorer!!! Don't the roads look great! Thank Joe Dean-EX Trustee and loyal soldier for PP. Things need to change fast here starting with a recall vote of this Mayor or at the least voting his gang out then him. All in my educated opinion of course.

Politicians are all dirtbags. Not one of them do I trust. Govt for the people, of the people and by the people? I think not. They should insert the word select so it reads we the (select) people. This govt. has become a joke.

There are a lot of people who truly know there stuff ( it's nice to see ) unfortunately there is one person who beats up small business. What a shame they do not know all the hard work and the struggle those mom & pop stores have . Is saddens me that they can not see that a large company like walmart distributed to thousands upon thousands of their own store so they are able to work the system and receive discount a small store could only dream of and receive property tax breaks a small store could never get . ( some property's tax free for 10 years thanks politicians ) For the small shops remember something we live and spend our money IN OUR TOWN and our tax $ stay here . While we do need some big box stores remember the money you spend with them LEAVES your state and goes to were their headquarters are . (The 350 project ) I give excellent customer service and only my best !! Proud owner of a small business .
Richard Kemp December 07, 2013 at 06:58 PM
P.T : In case you did not know N.Y.S. small buisness owners were recently given a tax break of some sort. There was a press conference held in the CupCake shop in Patchogue a few Month's ago. Also covered by the L.I. Advance.

Spoke to an employee and was informed that the landlord wanted a 40% increase in rent and a twenty year lease. I would not take that either. Sound like he has something up his sleeve. Michael's next. Maybe a Wal-Mart seeing how that did not float too well in E Patchogue. Just what we need is another big Box store BJ's in Bellport and Target in Sayville. Get enough of them and the we will have big empty buildings. There just will not be enough money in the area to support all of them. Crap service also with the big box stores. BUY LOCAL.
PatP. December 08, 2013 at 07:34 AM
PT, And the taxes we pay are kept local, think again local taxes go to line the pockets of local politicians to pay for vacation homes elsewhere and probably off shore accounts..
Paige Tarver December 08, 2013 at 08:13 AM
Thanks GEO :-) So everyone pays some tax in some form but small business does not survive on political payoffs they don't care about us . The comment was not only about taxes it was because some people beat up the small stores . I would never discredit someone's livelihood . People think small business get breaks . Mentioned earlier the only break offered to small business was for SOME women owned businesses & targeted businesses . What about all small businesses bakery's , pizza places , cleaners ,mechanics, hair salons ,flower shops ,etc ... All hard working people . While we need some box store we do not need them everywhere . Has anyone tried to rent a store how about $4000.00 for a 1000 square foot store and you pay for everything else separate- followed by $200.00 increases yearly . Landlord are over pricing ( hence King Kullen) How do small local businesses survive . We do our best to always give great customer service and the best we have to offer to our customers because we live in and love our town . I hope no one is offended I am just passionate about our business and want to survive and it is so hard is all . Well that's it :-)
Patchogue Snoop December 08, 2013 at 08:16 AM
I like to shop the Mom and Pops, but do use Costco for large bulk items. Your local shops are owned by our neighbors so it is important to use them!! Unfortunately, due to the sad state of affairs of our Fed Govt and their desire to destroy our country and what it stands for.....and move towards socialism so they can become the elite.....the middle class is being destroyed. I haven't had a cost of living raise in seven years because the POLS squandered our tax money. Now we suffer as the worker. Unfortunately, a lot of people now are forced to shop for the absolute best value to put the necessary items on the table. So sad.
Paige Tarver December 08, 2013 at 08:36 AM
Hey Patchogue Snoop I totally agree it is so hard out there but all we can do is fight the good fight and do the best we can. Our circumstances leave us all different situations but equally important struggles , we just have to try our best and move forward . Here's to the hope of a brighter new year :-)
annette kattau December 08, 2013 at 08:38 AM
There are almost no more Mon and Pop stores left. I am with you Snoop..Wallens was my favorite in Bellport...Now the other IGA will be in danger our town allowed a BJ's up at the old outlet site and Kepert has her BrookhavenVillage planned across from that to the east and acres of trees down for that. That being said in yesterdays newsday the developer from Nassau Country stated that Long Island is over retailed but the our ruling fathers don't listen to that all they say is that was a blighted area and this will be better....how about planting trees reforestation instead of big box and more Brookhaven Villages....Serota, and the propose shopping on the south side of sunrise across from serota more and more and we wind up with empy stores...what is the matter with have trees...they benefit us in the summer they cool. In the winter they shelter from winds...they keep us from have flash floods I could go on and on and our fathers are busy giving us the BRT, car farms come see Sills Rd look at the disaster go take a peak at the BRT....we must be more aware and less apathy come and join town board meeting and planning board meeting and u will see.
Jo Miller December 08, 2013 at 09:57 AM
Annette, Apathy in both town and village is a major problem. Our group, Citizens Campaign For Open Village Government, has been videotaping Patchogue Village Board meetings for over one year now, so that those who are unable to attend board meetings can become more informed. So few people attend board meetings and now that the Mayor and the Trustees have scheduled 6 PM meetings even fewer attend. Some people are still coming home from work at that time. Dare I suggest that this is the reason for the time change?
annette kattau December 08, 2013 at 12:14 PM
Yes you dare and that indeed is the reason...Its simple do we let them win or do we let them hang themselves....I have watched at town board level the people that fill the room and make the most noise win......without this we are finished. We CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN.....PLEASE CONTINUE TO LET PEOPLE KNOW...

Trader Joes Please!!!
annette kattau December 08, 2013 at 04:30 PM
answer to Betsy Smith no it does not mean walmart is toast...it has not gone away.....and will not....these stores will not come to this spot for the very reason KK is leaving. 40% increase in rent and 20 year lease....this property is owned by Pergament properties and I quess greed is their middle name...no one will come at these prices.....but alot of you will be happy in the lot across the way by Marshall where the chinese buffet was is a dollar store coming..Patchogue is now the world of apartments and dollar stores...oh great.....
Geo Euler December 08, 2013 at 08:05 PM
Annette this village is becoming the mecca for cheap stores and apartments. The only way to stop it is to put a stop to the renting of single family homes and not following up on the occupancy. When you have illegal occupancy, hit the landlord with fines that will force him into compliance. If I am correct Patchogue has about 55% of the single family homes are rentals and am sure that there are more than one family living in them. It will be interesting to see what happens to the four corners in the future. The other apartment's went south as you well know. Time will tell.

Oooo! How 'bout a Harbor freight?
debi tucker February 19, 2014 at 05:01 PM
T-R-A-D-E-R J-O-E-S!!!!!!! and if the space is too big divide it for another needed business, the south shore really has been begging for this for years. We do not need another "basic" grocery store, Sunrise Highway from Bohemia to 112 Patchogue has plenty, the new meat Farms, Walbaum's Shoprite, Pathmark, we need a specialty one like Trader Joe's.
hollybern April 11, 2014 at 08:56 PM
Yes...how about a Trader Joe's or an Uncle Giuseppe's???
