Medford Planet Fitness Opening For Holidays

Sunshine Square location to be showcase gym, owner says.

The upcoming Medford location of Planet Fitness coming to the former Ultimate Fitness Medford location at 700 E. Patchogue-Yaphank Rd. is planning on opening just in time for residents to start working off those big holiday meals.

According to a sign posted on the door, the gym plans on opening in December.

The owner of the facility is reported by LIBN to be John Mahoney, who also owns Planet Fitness locations in Hampton Bays, Riverhead and Rocky Point. Mahoney had entered into contract for the storefront in June, and he said in the report that he has been eyeing the Sunshine Square shopping center for a long time.

“I drove by that location for years and I always thought it was an ideal location, but I never saw any space available,” Mahoney said in the report. “Then a real estate broker reached out to me and said there was a pending vacancy, which we luckily were able to take advantage of.”

Despite the previous Ultimate Fitness gym not working out in the same location, Mahoney told LIBN that he's confident his will as Planet Fitness has an entirely different business model.

The property, reported to be 24,500 square feet of space, is currently being renovated to become a "showcase gym," Mahoney said.

In addition to the usual treadmills, elliptical machines and other purple and yellow colored workout equipment at Planet Fitness locations, the facility is planned to have equipment not seen at other locations including a multistation Life Fitness machine as well as other strength-training equipment.

The gym will also have two hydromassage beds, tanning beds, massage chairs and a red light therapy total body enhancement machine that is claimed to rejuvenate skin.

The franchise's current closet location to Medford is 81 Middle Country Rd. in Centereach.
