Nearby: Readers Offer Up Ideas for Sayville Stadtmuller Location

In two weeks the historic Sayville jeweler will close its doors forever.

The news F. Stadtmuller Jewelers in Sayville will close March 16 brought reactions of surprise and sadness frpm many Patch readers with several reminiscing about sentimental jewelery and gifts bought over the decades at the Main Street retailer.

The store, which has been in business for 156 years, will leave a gaping vacany in the downtown shopping district so Patch asked readers for their ideas about what new store should move in.

The first idea, supported by Josephine and Judy, was a Trader Joe's, a retailer that does not have a location in the Blue Point to West Sayville area.

Steve suggested another jewelery store after noting the closing was a an unwelcome event.

"So sad to see this close down. It's been there since I was a little boy," he wrote.

Diana isn't sure what should move in but she's very clear on what shouldn't:

"Anything but a bank.... Maybe a red mango!," she commented.

A "really great BBQ place like Smokin' Al's," was offered up by Judy Smith-Smith, while Nancy Pierson suggested a clothing store like Ann Taylor Loft or The Gap.

Eliza Kay likes those latter ideas and has a few other potentials in mind.

"I go for stores like AT, Gap or the like. No more eateries. I miss the artisan stores that were plentiful in Sayville just 10 years ago, but couldn't make the rent. No more pharms, banks, credit unions, etc. Something with class (not more junk) with moderate prices.......and gluten-free!," she wrote.

Reader Jim humorously noted what he doesn't want to see move into the site.

"Hair salon," he initially wrote.

When a reader replied there was already a great salon in Sayville, Jim quickly responded to clarify his answer.

"Hair Salon comment was meant to be a joke, there seem to be about 20 in a 2 mile radius."

Why not a clothing store like Ann Taylor loft or gap? Huntington and northport do

Maybe Violets Blue can come back. That store was fabulous!

Retail for sure. It will be sad seeing it go. I knew the fam; they are to this day fantastic people. Im sure the decision didn't come easy. I go for stores like AT, gap or the like. No more eateries. I miss the artisan stores that were plentiful in sayville just 10 years ago, but couldn't make the rent. No more pharms, banks, credit unions, etc. Something with class (not more junk) with moderate prices.......and gluten-free! :)
