Nearby: Target One Step Closer to Arriving in Sayville

Town has approved the site plan and next step are building permits.

Brandname retailer Target is one step closer to building a store in Sayville, at the former site of the Attias flea market, now that the Town of Islip has green lighted its site plan.

According to town planning officials the site plan was approved by the town engineer on April 8. The next step is the application and awarding of building permits. The store will be located at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Sunrise Highway.

The town approved a modification of deed covenants and a special permit for a retail use over 10,000 square feet back in mid December, 2012. The site, which now stands empty as the flea market officially closed in early February, already has the appropriate business zoning.

There has been no official announcement from Target about the proposed store and a spokesperson has told Patch earlier this year that the retailer typically doesn't announce a new opening until one year prior to the build launch date.

While many local residents have stated they are happy the flea market has closed, there have been community concerns expressed about potential traffic and impact to the downtown Sayville shopping district.

A request to Target regarding the project was not immediately returned. Patch will update the story when further information is provided.
