Long Island travelers looking to visit family or perhaps seeking a Caribbean getaway will soon have a local flight option to Puerto Rico.

On its Facebook page, Long Island MacArthur Airport announced new Southwest Airlines service from Long Island to San Juan, Puerto Rico, beginning Sept. 30.

Islip Town spokesperson Inez Birbiglia told Patch that the new flight is direct to San Juan through Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., with no plane change required.

The flight will depart MacArthur at 7 a.m. and arrive in Puerto Rico at 1:20 p.m. Return flights will require a plane change in either Baltimore, Orlando or Tampa with a total travel time of 7 hours and 45 minutes.

The new flight may serve to signal future additional service at the Ronkonkoma-based airport.

Recently, Islip Town and airport officials welcomed PenAir to MacArthur Airport. The Alaska-based airline is now offering daily service to Boston’s Logan Airport.
