Target Plans to Build New Location at Attias Flea Market Site

Big box hopes to open at Sayville site within a year; Patchogue Chamber not ready to comment on possible impact to local businesses.

A proposed East Patchogue Walmart is nowhere near opening its doors, but a new Target could be open in Sayville within a year.

Target is in the process of obtaining the necessary approvals from the Town of Islip to demolish the Attias Flea Market and build a new big box store on the site.

Jacqueline Hensley, the new Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce president, told Patch that news of a Target opening nearby, is well, news to the board.

Hensley said the board expected it would learn more about the project in the coming months.

"That's when we can start discussing," Hensley said, of the possible effects the store may have on businesses in Patchogue.

The president of the Sayville Chamber, Bill Etts, has already said he believes the Target will hurt businesses in downtown Sayville.

“We’re in a tough spot [to oppose the store] as they don’t require a change of zone,” President Bill Etts told Patch in a phone interview.

“This is another big box store that will drain business from Sayville’s business district which is already hurting terribly from the economic recession," he said. "More retail in Sayville is the last thing we need as this will hurt the little shops."

Some Patchogue and Medford residents have been similarly opposed or in support of a possible East Patchogue Walmart that currently has not yet been voted on. When Patch last checked in with Walmart in July, they were making progress on their next Environmental Impact Statement that it will need to submit to Brookhaven Town to progress.

Several Patchogue Patch readers have posted comments through Facebook on their thoughts on Target coming to the flea market location:

Sarah MacDonald Don't think Target would be down with having a carnival in its parking lot anymore.

Joanne Gianfrisco DePalma That flea market is a scuzzy hole!! Glad Target is coming !!! We need one close to my job for Lunch hour runs !

Peter Charles That place has always been a dump.

Lisa Bochicchio Fannon I would love a target!! I am always complaining that I need one closer to my job and this would work!!!

Lori Beth Devlin Traffic, we already have traffic, do not see how Target will add to it... honestly, it would be a big improvement.

Beth Metro-Berube Would've like a Trader Joes or Whole Foods!!

Vicki Limoggio-Atkins Yay! Finally something on the south shore very close to Patchogue!

Jennifer Viola Errico No fond memories from when it was the 2002 roller rink?

Target already has a Medford location at 2975 Horseblock Road.

Judy Mottl contributed to this story.

Sunrise hwy is the land of the big box stores deal with it people. The village of Sayville will not be effected either way....... Main st. Sayville Relax blue point, bayport, west sayville, oakdale still loves you...... What ever we go to the big box world for we weren't going to main st. Sayville for any way. The cons are ridiculous legitimate business helps everyone. That flea market should have been shut down years ago. Can we also put a Chipolte in the parking lot somewhere huh huh huh!!!

The south shore needs some big box stores, people can not afford the high prices of the mom and pop stores any longer as for Patchogue village it is 75% food places and the other 25% you can't find what you want so it's off to the Target or whatever. I was born and rasied in Patchogue and the economy is not what it used to be, it's called progress or so I am told....

There is NOTHING that I would go to downtown Sayville instead of going to Target to buy. So it's a silly argument, My goal is my own pocketbook and who ever offers the most affordable purchase for me is where I am going to go.

good riddence to that disgusting flea market.i rather have a wal mart than a target..
PatchawgFatGuy October 21, 2012 at 12:25 AM
I've been to that flea market twice and both times I wondered "WTF am I doing here?" So, I agree with you! B-BYE!!!!!
PatchawgFatGuy October 21, 2012 at 12:27 AM
I also agree with the Whole Foods idea.
jared October 21, 2012 at 12:50 AM
no whole foods. the south shore doesn't have the clientele for a whole foods. Besides there already is a 63000 sq foot stopnshop across the street, at 45000 sq foot pathmark also and another 40000 sq foot stopnshop in downtown sayville. To much over saturation of grocery stores.
jared October 21, 2012 at 12:52 AM
if its going to be anything, let it be target. Target corp takes good cares of the properties that they outright own.
Lee October 21, 2012 at 01:13 AM
Would you people cut it out with the Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. They ain't cummin to da south shore!!! Be happy u got a Best Market. Blah! blah!blah!

My wife and I recently opened a small business at the market selling ladies shoes and clothing. In April we invested over 20k to build what looks like a boutique in the middle of an armpit, so imagine how we feel. Truth is, a market like that is the perfect way to start a small business; the rents are affordable, and there (typically, but not since this began as a rumor moonths ago...) is a built in pedestrian traffic. Its really a shame.. His greed is putting over 100 families on unenployment.
Archie Bunker October 22, 2012 at 03:03 PM
If it's priced right, you'll do well. The problem with mom and pop shops are their mark ups (whether necessary or not). You can go to Blums and pay $60 for a bathing suit or go to Kohls and buy 4 for that price. It's a no brainer.
explora95 October 22, 2012 at 03:18 PM
If you are loyal to a store you will continue to shop there. It will bring needed jobs to the area..We live across the street so it will be convenient. There are shops in Sayville and Patchogue that are unique and don't carry what Target does.

Rant: I'm a sayville resident and I agree that the flea market has gone down in recent years..... Its half empty and has lost alot of charm. However, I reject another corporate store being put up. America is turning into a corporate chain business outlet and the "small businesses" are quietly being squashed. Do we need another corporate chain store? I think not. Perhaps a more logical solution in a world where profit dictates logic is to invest and bring the flea market up. Maybe have the barrier to entry for stores easier and encourage diversity by not relying on jewelry stores. Maybe divide up sections and have some low level name brand stores in parts of the market? They could put street food vendors dedicated to exoctic foriegn food vendors like turkish kabobs and halal meats with some asian places as well. A whole section of "street food" vendors would be a killer idea and They could also make it like a bazaar market. Presentation is half the battle and right now yes.........the flea market has lost alot of its mojo but it could be turned into a unique market place rather than just killing it off to make room for the giant plague of corporate chain stores.

good im glad they r opening up a target, kmart is the only retailer in town and im glad to have a choice. And yes it does create jobs, regardless of the pay these r jobs. The local private shops in sayville dont hire and dont help the economy b/c they r so overpriced and they have been hurting for years. The flea market is disgusting and an eye sore. Target will be a welcome sight to the area
Jodi Gallipani Raimondi December 04, 2012 at 01:03 PM
and maybe other stores will open in that shopping center and stay in business. This could only help the community in so many ways.
Stephanie January 19, 2013 at 04:31 AM
Target is the only solution. Look at the SunVet mall. There are smaller shops in there and the mall is only half filled. Although that could do with the horrible management at Sun Vet. Target is a welcomed addition it will most likely stimulate that area and help Sun Vet clean up it's act too plus it is getting rid of that dump flea market.
Wayne D. January 19, 2013 at 12:52 PM
Ms. Hensley states the possible affects on Patchogue businesses, Target does not have a bar or gin mill so there would be no competition
Wayne D. January 19, 2013 at 12:59 PM
That's what is wrong in Patchogue village, the closest dept store is in Medford or Kmart. I don't understand the thinking in this village, nothing but bars, bars and more bars !!! Get a real supermarket, dept. store, etc. if you want foot traffic that can walk a straight line. Most Mom and Pop stores are a think of the past....

lauren bochicchio February 14, 2013 at 06:36 PM
Does anyone do any actual research when they write an article anymore? Lets look at some facts! What are targets biggest sellers vs. the area shops that also make their biggest profits from said products? I'm sure I go to target for toiletries, housecleaning supplies, and SOME grocery items. Never in my life have I bought any of that from a shop on Main Street.
Anony mous February 18, 2013 at 02:09 AM
So many retards commenting here same idiots that complain there's no jobs. Well you just shut down hundreds of jobs to make one single minimum wage slave factory. Yes the flea market looked crappy but made more jobs for more people then a crappy target. I guess we're just turning into middle America
PatP. February 18, 2013 at 01:03 PM
The only retards you refer to are out of a job at the flea bitten market, maybe they should put in a job application at Target and step up in the county.....
Sandy Hamilton February 18, 2013 at 02:10 PM
A lot of the venders used relatives to help them out. Example Sunny watches. Husband and wife ....they were moving to the Sauce location. Seems a few were taking some time off after the Christmas holidays to rest up before looking for a new place. Perhaps going to see how the ones who moved to the Sauce would make out.
Archie Bunker February 18, 2013 at 02:37 PM
I actually enjoy spending the least amount of money when I buy something.
