Weekend Guide: Alive After Five, Chili and a Pageant

Weekend events for Aug. 13-15.

Music, chili and beauty all have a part in this mid-August weekend in Patchogue. The final Alive After Five festival for 2010, 27th Annual Snapper Derby, Miss L.I. Beauty Pageant, and the Mercy Center Ministries Chili Cookoff are some of the highlights.

Friday, Aug. 13

Alive After Five, 5-9 p.m., Main Street and South Ocean Avenue, Patchogue

Patchogue's summer festival series comes to a close Friday with its fourth and final edition for 2010. Bands Urbon Acoustic, Reckoning, Noah's Arc and Rock Junkys will be playing on the four stages set up in the downtown area. 

Movement, 9 p.m., Once & For All Cafe, 8 E. Main St., Patchogue

Movement is a side project band that features Tom Groney from the local electronic trio, The Forensics, as well as Charlie Mirro from the rock and jazz band, Reckoning. This show will be the first time the band has played together since Christmas Eve 2009.

Baked Clams, 9 p.m., Bobbique, 70 W. Main St., Patchogue

This cover band with a funk edge will play the barbecue restaurant after Alive After Five ends. 

Saturday, Aug. 14

27th Annual Snapper Derby, 1:00 p.m., Mascot Dock, 600 South Ocean Ave., Patchogue

This fishing contest will have divisions for children ages 6-10 and 11-14. Participants must supply their own fishing rod, and bait and tackle will be provided. Prizes are being offered to each age group in a variety of categories. Registration is $3 in advance and $5 the day of the derby.

Six Gun Live, 7:00 p.m., Shorefront Park Bandshell, 31 Smith St., Patchogue

Patchogue Village's summer concert series continues with country band Six Gun Live. The show will be free and take place outside in front of the bandshell.

Sunday, Aug. 15

Miss L.I. Pageant, 4:00 p.m., Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts, 71 E. Main St., Patchogue

Women will compete to be named Miss Long Island and Miss Long Island Teen in this beauty pageant. The winner will receive paid entry into the Miss New York pageant, a crown made of Austrian crystals and a satin sash among other prizes. Hayley Maj will be representing the Village of Patchogue in the teen competition. Admission costs $52.

Mercy Center Ministries Chili Contest, 5:00 p.m., Mickey Felice's Steak House, 411 West Main Street, Patchogue

Registration costs $10 to enter a chili and a side dish. Admission into the event to taste chili also costs $10, and children under age 12 are free. This chili contest will benefit Mercy Center Ministries' three residences for homeless teen girls and teen mothers. Those interested in entering should contact 631-447-3978.
