News Nearby: Woman Walking in Patchogue Attacked, Sexually Assaulted

Patchogue

A 24-year-old woman walking on Main Street in Patchogue was sexually assaulted and robbed early Saturday morning, police said.  

According to police, the woman was walking westbound on the south side of Main Street at approximately 3:15 a.m. when a man came up from behind her and dragged her into a grassy and wooded area between West Avenue and River Avenue.

Deer Park-North Babylon

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Hate Crimes Unit detectives are asking for the public's help to locate the individual(s) responsible for spray painting racial slurs on the outside of the Deer Park Community Center. 

Police said the incident occurred sometime between 3:12 a.m. and 4:45 a.m. on June 25. Besides the slurs, other assorted words and symbols were also spray painted on outside of the building located at 41 Homer Avenue.

Half Hollow Hills

A Brentwood man was arrested on a DWI charge following a fatal crash on the Long Island Expressway in Dix Hills Sunday night, police said. 

According to Suffolk Police, Carleton English, 50, was driving westbound on the LIE in a 2002 BMW SUV when he struck the rear end of a 2000 Audi sedan that was also travelling westbound at 10:42 p.m. The driver of the Audi, Henry Lapine, 58, of Levittown, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sayville-Bayport

The Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce is launching a three-pronged strategy to fight the proposed Islip Pines mixed-use development in Holbrook with business group officials saying it would greatly hurt downtown businesses.

Lindenhurst

Two village residents complained to the Lindenhurst Village Board about their neighboring empty properties, both with overgrown vegetation, deteriorating homes and potentially dangerous situations lying just on the other side of the fence.

Babylon Village

It looks as though Babylonians looking for a burger will have to look somewhere else – the village board unanimously denied the application of restaurant chain BurgerFi earlier this month.

The board denied the application for the restaurant, which was to be located at 94 Deer Park Avenue, because plans did not include waiters at the eatery and anticipated a huge spike in traffic around the already congested village.

Sachem

A Brooklyn man could be spending 22 years in state prison after he was sentenced for killing a 62 year old Holbrook woman while fleeing the scene of a theft, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota.  

Cordell Tucker, 26, was convicted in May of second-degree manslaughter, second degree assault, third degree grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, reckless endangerment and several traffic violations. On June 27 He was sentenced to the maximum 7 and 1/3 to 22 years for the crime.

West Islip  

Negotiations between the West Islip Board of Education and Atlantic Auto Group to lease parking space at Masera Learning Center have dissolved, BOE officials announced Tuesday.
