Patchogue Bayfront Beaches Closed

County health department says Sunday's heavy rains make water unsuitable for swimming.

Several Great South Bay beaches have been closed by the Suffolk County Department of Health following yesterday’s torrential storms that doused the area with more than six inches of rain.

Among the beaches closed are Bayport Beach; Corey Creek Beach in Bayport; Patchogue Village Pool & Beach Club; Sandpit Beach in Patchogue; Sayville Beach; Sayville Marina Park Beach, West Islip Beach.

According to health department officials, the advisory is based on the potential that bacterial numbers in excess of New York State standards resulting from the heavy rain will impact these areas.

The beaches covered by the advisory are located in areas that are heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds and/or adjacent tributaries, and, because of their location in an enclosed embayment, experience limited tidal flushing, officials said.

Beaches not directly influenced by stormwater runoff, including those located on the Atlantic Ocean, the Peconic Estuary, and most beaches on Long Island Sound, are not affected by this advisory.
