In 2008 the story made national headlines when Lucero was assaulted by a group of teenaged boys cruising the streets “beaner–hopping,” a term used to describe the ritual of attacking Latinos for sport.  The film exposes how the adolescent “game” was ignored for at least half of decade by Suffolk County, Long Island police and officials, resulting in the fatal stabbing of Lucero.  The film probes a community that tacitly approved of anti-immigrant violence.

Long Island native Susan Hagedorn, director and producer of the film remarked, “This crime could have happened anywhere. Until we have full equality for immigrants, we are all at risk. Deputized provides a balanced look at the multiple factors in the community and country that killed Marcelo Lucero and left Suffolk County residents asking themselves, "¿Cómo Pudo Pasar?" or, in English, "How could this happen?"

Patrick Young of the Central American Refugee Center said: “Deputized...is the first movie I have seen that honestly portrays the interplay of racism, fear and politics in the deputization of young men as killers in the service of a community’s values.”

Delving deeply into the complex environment in which teens – pumped with adrenaline, aggression, alcohol and anger – target vulnerable Latinos perceived to be undocumented, Deputized dissects the anti-immigration messages and rhetoric flooding the community and raises the question: Were the teens deputized by the forces within their community to commit such a senseless act?

Deputized continues to garner recognition on the festival circuit, recently winning the Humanitarian Award at the 2013 Long Island International Film Expo, as well as selections by the Durango Independent Film Festival, Hampton’s Take 2 Documentary Film Festival , San Antonio Film Festival,  Arizona International Film Festival and the Long Island International Film Expo.
