Book Review :: Heartbreak in Paris - The Paris Wife: A Novel By Paula McLain

Book Review :: Heartbreak in Paris - The Paris Wife: A Novel By Paula McLain

Hemingway one of my favorites but WOW I loved him and hated him in this book. It was a nice read and a wonderful insight to how the first wife of Hemingway fell in love with a writer. Yes, I know it is fiction but the story brought me right into their small apartment, the cafes with friends and enemies, the beaches of Spain and the mountains in Europe.

Product Description (from Amazon)

A deeply evocative story of ambition and betrayal, The Paris Wife captures a remarkable period of time and a love affair between two unforgettable people: Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley.

Chicago, 1920: Hadley Richardson is a quiet twenty-eight-year-old who has all but given up on love and happiness—until she meets Ernest Hemingway and her life changes forever. Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and volatile group—the fabled “Lost Generation”—that includesGertrude SteinEzra Pound, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald

Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill prepared for the hard-drinking and fast-living life of Jazz Age Paris, which hardly values traditional notions of family and monogamy. Surrounded by beautiful women and competing egos, Ernest struggles to find the voice that will earn him a place in history, pouring all the richness and intensity of his life with Hadley and their circle of friends into the novel that will become The Sun Also Rises. Hadley, meanwhile, strives to hold on to her sense of self as the demands of life with Ernest grow costly and her roles as wife, friend, and muse become more challenging. Despite their extraordinary bond, they eventually find themselves facing the ultimate crisis of their marriage—a deception that will lead to the unraveling of everything they’ve fought so hard for.

A heartbreaking portrayal of love and torn loyalty, The Paris Wife is all the more poignant because we know that, in the end, Hemingway wrote that he would rather have died than fallen in love with anyone but Hadley.

Justice for Dr. Carlos Rivera
Daisy Bodon May 26, 2013 at 01:55 am
It is very sad for the children and families that may have to look for a different pediatrician, onRead More the other hand all of this could have been avoided. Dr Carlos Rivera committed adultery which is illegal in NY. Not only did he cheat on his wife, he also cheated on his family. Instead of Dr. Rivera publicizing his affair and his failed suicidal attempts, he should have been reviewing his child support agreements or consulting with a new lawyer. Also crucifying his ex wife is not the answer. It must be very difficult, especially in this economy to look for work that not only will work around her children's schedule AS SHE IS NOW A SINGLE PARENT, but that also pays her enough to support her children while making sure they are being cared for. Day care and before care costs these days make it very difficult for a parent to even go to work.. Especially with 4 children (sometimes its not even worth it ) And since we are talking about the children, why don't we also cover a story on the life long effects on a child when adultery is committed?? Please forgive me but with all these petitions, support pages and fb posts, one can't help but think there's a little bit of hypocrisy going on here. You feel he is being crucified, so you attack and crucify the ex wife... You speak of her being a stay at home mom, but I know at least one of your supporters is also is a stay at home mom.. You speak of him being a great and loyal man to the children of society (which I don't deny he is) but it is very unfortunate that he could not be that loyal man to his family. On a final note, I can only judge from reading his words, but I myself as a parent would have done the same by making sure his visitations were supervised the minute after he took pills that were not prescribed to him(which if you didn't know is illegal drug use) along with a butcher knife and tried to commit suicide. These are the words quoted from his support page.. "I could not take it any longer. I could not take another second of what my life had become. Tears of anguish poured from my eyes as I raced home with intent on ending the suffering immediately! There was no plan; there was just grief beyond containment. I took Xanax and Valium prescribed for Jaime and her mother for anxiety they suffered from while waiting for a heart donor. Pills in hand, I grabbed a large carving knife from the kitchen and stormed out headed for a hotel room to end the suffering I could no longer bear.I wrote my last goodbyes as I drank alcohol and attempted to dull my senses with anxiolytics. I waited for the right moment, the twilight I had imagined that would take place where seconds before I drifted off I would pierce my heart and exsanguinate myself. The last thing I recall was the banging on the door" Would you trust your child with someone who is clearly unstable?
