How to Avoid Traffic Jams

Tips for avoiding traffic jams.

If you own a car or have ever driven on Long Island or the LIE, than you would
agree that fewer things are more frustrating than being stuck in traffic. It’s
hard on your car and your nerves, not to mention that it will make you late for
whatever it is that you had planned.

Traffic can be caused by a great number of things like inclement weather, car

accidents, construction, stupidity, and about a million other things. Though it
is sometimes impossible to avoid, there are steps you can take to lessen your
chances of being stuck in a traffic jam. Here are some tips:

- Plan alternate routes. It is a good idea to have a few different routes
mapped out when driving somewhere. At the first sign of a backup, you may have
the opportunity to switch routes and avoid the issue.

- Adjust your work schedule. The average person works between 8am and 6pm. This also means that they all usually travel to and from work at the same time. If
you plan on getting to work an hour early and leaving an hour late, you will
likely avoid the majority of the traffic.

- Listen to the radio. News stations on AM news stations tend to do traffic
updates multiple times an hour and are usually pretty accurate. Keep updated
and plan accordingly. This ties in with having multiple routes mapped out.

- Use technology. There are multiple aps like Waze and Traffic Monitor that
gives instant traffic updates. These aps will alert you of changing traffic
patterns, traffic severity, and even where the police are hiding. They are
great tools and can potentially wasted time and frustration of being stuck in
traffic.

All though traffic is sometimes unavoidable there are steps you can take to be
prepared and lessen your chances of being stuck in it. Follow these tips and
plan ahead and you will notice that your time in the car will decrease
dramatically. Remember to drive smart and drive safe.

I use motor pkwy to get aroud traffic on the LIE. IF its between deer park ave and exit 57.
The problem is there are not many alternative routes on long island. 347 is just as bad and sunrise is too far south for a lot of people.

Woodside Avenue is a good alternative route for when Sunrise gets clogged east of 112.

Seriously, studies have shown, that the more roads that they are, the more cars will be on them.
There is only one way to get rid of traffic. Get rid of your car. However, no one on this sand barge we call Long Island would agree with that statement so no one should be complaining. You have a car? Then you are part of the problem, not the solution.

Pazi how do you expect most of us to get to work ? Public transportation is setup to get you in and out of the city. IF you work more then 20 miles away from home but not in NYC there is next to no public transportation. Also good like if you want to take public transportation going south to north.

majortom1981,
I don't expect anyone to get to work, there's too much traffic to get anywhere and It's not what I am saying. All I am saying is that traffic is caused by automobiles on the road. The more roads you build, the more cars will be travelling on them. To get rid of traffic, you have to get rid of cars. There is no magic solution to this. It's the suburbs, it's the unwritten law that everyone has to have a car and as mentioned, the more cars, the more traffic. Its a vicious circle. There is only one fix. Get rid of the cars. For people who don't want to give up their cars, then so be it. We'll all deal with traffic. It's a quality of life issue. We all choose what kind of life we want to lead. If you want a car to get to your job, that's fine, deal with the traffic then but don't complain about it. Don't want to deal with traffic? Then get a job where there is good public transportation or move to a place that doesn't have traffic issues. It's very simple. But the fact remains, cars cause traffic. Everyone seems to think there is a grand solution to this by adding more roads, or building more HOV lanes, but its the amount of cars on these roads causing traffic. Reduce the number of cars and watch traffic get better. But no one wants to give up thier cars and this is the issue we're dealing with.

dissolve LIPA and give the lines back to Nationalgrid as one company back like when it was LILCO.Read More LIPA = what happens when government gets involved in private business
Lipa Oversight June 12, 2013 at 07:15 pm
The proposed structure will have zero enforceable oversight by the PSC, Comptroller or AttorneyRead More General, Let alone the fact that close to 200 pair of eyes through lipa will no longer be scrutinizing what the sub contractor does, pseg. And on top of all that there is a built in profit layer of 10%, management fees, management bonuses and off island shareholder accountability....That being said and knowing that privatization is not financially feasible. The only workable solution is full Municipalization like 2000 other utilities in the country who have some of the lowest rates and highest customer satisfaction....all the governor is proposing is kicking the can down the street and out of sight regardless of cost to the ratepayer....we can not afford another cuomo mistake like his dad with Lilco....
