Patchogue Village Board Meeting 2/25/13

This blog is part of an ongoing public education effort by the Citizens Campaign For Open Village Government

Full video of village board is now available on this site. Some items worth noting follow.

A resolution allowing the Village to pierce the two percent tax cap imposed by state law was passed 5 to 1 with Trustee Crean opposing.  An explanation of the 2% tax cap is available on line.  The Link is Real Property Tax Cap Information Office of the NY State Comptroller.

Mayor Pontieri pointed out that although the Village Board  voted last year to pierce the cap, the village budget actually stayed within the 2%.   However Trustee Ferb warned that the coming fiscal year will be "challenging".  Businesses and homes rendered uninhabitable by super storm Sandy are removed from the tax rolls for at least one year.  Furthermore with the demolition of the Sweezy buildings, Trierc is also off the tax rolls as is the old Clare Rose Facility on West Ave.  As a consequence, Trustee Ferb indicates residents may see a 10%  or more increase in their village taxes.  He anticipates however, that  the completion of the Riverwalk Project on West Ave will engender significant future tax revenue for the village.

In response to an inquiry as to how the surplus in the sewer fund was created,   the Mayor explained that for each unit of a condominium development there is an initial hook up per gallon fee based on estimated usage.  Several months ago the Board was considering using the $600,000 surplus to grant loans to residents who wished to hook up to the sewer.  Currenlty however, the plan is to use the surplus for repair of village roads.
