Water Safety from Your Friends at the Patchogue Family YMCA & Brookhaven Roe Y Center

Water Safety Tips

Summertime means pool time for many kids and adults, and as they venture to their favorite spots to swim and play, it's important to keep in mind safety
first. The following are tips to help you, and your family stay safe.

Water Safety Tips:
Only swim when and where there is a lifeguard on duty, never swim alone. Even in your backyard pool an adult should be present and actively alert while children are in and around the pool.

Inexperienced swimmers should wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket when in, on, or around the water.

Parents or guardians of children who are non-swimmers or beginning level swimmers should be in the water and within arm's reach of their child.

Children and adults should not engage in breath holding activities in the water.

Adults should constantly and actively watch children in and near the water.  If multiple adults are in the vicinity, designate a "water watcher" so everyone knows who is on duty.

Your barking dog complaint in North Patchogue is handled by Public Safety, Town of Broohaven. CallRead More them at 451-6161 and they will take action. The first time the owners will be warned, the next time they will receive a summons.

Don't know what the Town ordnance is, but if you live within the Village of Patchogue, I believeRead More there is a "15 minute rule" in the code. Basically, if the dog is barking for more than 15 continuous minutes, it's a violation subject to a fine. Call public safety at 475-1225. Keep in mind it's probably not their first priority (unless the dog has a bad attitude, and is carrying a weapon), but they will be responsive, eventually.
