Patchogue's Michael Murphy Honored In Exercise Event

"Memorial Day Murph" is an internet-based fundraiser for military charities.

A Wisconsin CrossFit center honored the memory of Patchogue Navy SEAL Michael Murphy on Memorial Day as part of an internet-based workout event named in his memory.

The “Murph” workout consists of a one-mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, 300 squats and another one-mile run.

Crossfit Vanguard in Appleton, WI was one of the “Memorial Day Murph” locations, which according to the center’s website is an annual internet-based fundraiser for military charities.

The national fundraiser website for Memorial Day Murph is http://mdmfundraiser.com/, and on that website it also pointed toward an After Party event that took place at The Corner Bar in San Diego, CA. According to the national website, anyone could do the workout and participate in the event from whichever location they live.

While 2013 stats are not yet listed on the national website, in 2012 the fundraiser had over 7,000 participants and $140,000 was donated to four charities as well as $5,000 donated to family members of OPERATION Red Wings to help them attend the commissioning of the USS Michael Murphy ship last October.

According to the fundraiser’s Facebook Page, while final numbers are not yet in, 2013’s effort was “the biggest MDM ever.”

Lt. Michael Murphy, of Patchogue, was a part of a four-member SEAL team, and was shot on June 29, 2005 while on duty. Murphy has been posthumously honored with a ship, numerous awards, a film and this workout named after him.
