Question: Where Would You Add Parking?

Parking is being added to Terry Street, where do you want it?

Parking spaces are being added to Terry Street and Taylor Lane, in addition to a .

I suggest firing up Google Earth and taking a look at Downtown Patchogue. First off the satellite imagery is very recent. For example it shows the fully completed YMCA complex. Basically, it looks like the most recent images were taken mid-day and I'd estimate all of the Downtown parking lots are half to three-quarters full. Once Tritec gets going, we will have a real problem! As I suggested elsewhere, the Tritec Tier Park doesn't have anywhere the number of spaces necessary to take care of the added parking load that it will create. One solution is to expand the tier park across Lake Street. That could add several hundred spaces right where they are needed. Given that the Church Street parking lot is always super full, adding a tier park there is a good option although, more cars park in the Terry Street and it is larger, perhaps that is a better place for one, or perhaps another. As much as some have advocated making Patchogue a "Walking Community," without drawing people who are too far to walk from the outlying areas of our community with ample parking, this expansion of the Downtown area with Tritec will only produce a nightmare and no one will want to shop here.

Actually I can tell from things near my house that the pictures were taken last summer, 2010. As for parking spaces, the obvious choice is to condemn some of the existing buildings along Terry Street and expand the parking there. The suggestion of the tiered lot on Church Street has merit but only if it's done correctly and not just jammed in to a space because "that is all we have". If condemnation is required, then it must be done. The hand wringing over taxes has got to be put behind us. We MUST pay the taxes if we want the services, period. If the Village thinks it would fly, put meters back in the lots. Metered parking is a double edged sword. A plus is that it prevents all those long term parkers who just leave their vehicles. What it also can do is scare away potential shoppers. I think that part of the scare problem could be assuaged with the proper pricing at the meters. Low enough to seem painless and high enough to make it worthwhile for the village. And obviously meters are only as good as the law enforcement behind them.

How about the Patchogue LIRR parking lot and the lot on Sephton Street? Currently there is no charge to park in the railroad lot on Saturday and Sunday. Residents are free with a sticker from Village Hall.

You are quite right about the situation there, but it's not in the Village, so the Village can't do anything about it.
