Authorities: Pilot Killed When Plane Goes Down in Long Island Sound

Incident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. Monday.

The pilot of a small plane that went down in the Long Island Sound Monday morning was killed in the crash, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center received a report from another aircraft operating in the vicinity of a possible downed aircraft at about 8:50 a.m., according to a Coast Guard press release.

The aircraft that crashed several miles north of Mattituck Inlet was described as a small, white, fixed wing, single-engine plane, the Coast Guard said.

NBC New York has reported that the plane was found submerged in the water four miles north of Mattituck.

Mattituck Fire Department divers recovered the male pilot's body from the aircraft, the Coast Guard said. No one else was reported to be on the plane at the time.

The New York Post reported the pilot's identity as that of Manhattan resident Zubair Kahn, who built the plane that crashed himself.

The National Transportation Safety Board will be the lead agency for investigating the crash, the Coast Guard said.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station New Haven from New Haven, Conn., searched for the wreckage along with Suffolk County Marine Bureau Police as well as Riverhead and Southhold emergency medical services.

Another failed experiment.

Virtually all aircraft accidents are caused by pilot error........#1 cause in small aircraft incidents is simply running out of fuel......

It looks like the Patch talked to the Coast Guard. Did they talk to the FAA? Where did the plane take off from? Did it file a flight plan? Where was it headed? Was he an experienced pilot? Did he radio for help before the crash. If he was over LI he was in contact with LI Approach Controllers and had a transponder identifying him. What did they have to say about what they saw him doing on radar?

Thankful this irresponsible maniac did not crash into someone's home or kill any innocent bystanders.

Great! Sad to say, but a brief scan of the official FAA website reveals that most fatal crashes are connected to stupid, usually overage pilots flying "toyplanes". They all think that they are commercial/military pilots, but they are no more qualified than any boaters out there! Make them go immediately out to sea, and stay away from our backyards, please!
