E. Patchogue Man Found Dead in Bellport Bay

Police say death of Steven Maichen appears non-criminal.

An East Patchogue man was found dead near his boat in Bellport Bay Thursday morning, police said.

SCPD Marine Bureau officers discovered Steven Maichen, 55, floating by the boat less than a mile southeast of the Bellport Village Marina at 11:15 a.m., police said.

Maichen was transported to the Bellport dock and pronounced dead by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.

Police believe Maichen was having mechnical issues with the boat as the engine's cover was removed and found inside the vessel.

An autopsy will be performed to determine Maichen's cause of death, but police said "the death appear to be non-criminal" as the investigation continues.
