Live Wires Service Neighborhood While On Ground in Holtsville

Thru-traffic closed on street, while neighbors post handmade cautions signs, road cones.

Residents on a street in Holtsville are growing increasingly concerned with power lines that are laying in the road, entwinted around branches, but are still live and serving power to homes three days after they fell.

The lines, located on Hopes Avenue, just south of the Long Island Expressway service road, were pulled to the ground on Monday, during the height of Hurricane Sandy, according to Judy Chan, who lives on the street. Chan said fire department volunteers strung yellow tape around the wires, and warned neighbors about the danger, but days have passed since the incident was reported to LIPA.

"What if it rains?" Chan said. "It's gonna sparkle on the street, and the tree branches are laying in the wires."

While Patch was visiting the site, a neighbor stated that the wires are still powering his home. He also said he made calls to LIPA but hasn't seen a crew in the area.

Attempts to reach LIPA officials were unsuccessful. In the meantime, residents near the wire put out road cones and crafted a cardboard sign that reads "Live Wire. Do Not Cross. Big Risk."

"I was already having a heart attack the other day because I saw kids trick-or-treating," said Chan, who was told by LIPA that it could take anywhere from 7 to 14 days to resolve. "If you have little kids or stray cats they're going to get electrocuted."

Good for you neighbors. Problem fixed. Lipa workers are long islanders like us. They are doing the best they can. Maybe some of their families have no power too while they are out working for us!!!

All the places for ice have none. 7 11 if they have is is selling it for $15 a bag. The Gas shortage is no media hype, it is true ! Rationing in N J, still limited gas in NY, and long island. Have you been reading the news? Friends of ours stood online for 3 hr for dry ice and when they got close, they had none left. I never cursed anyone out. I just made a plain and simple statement. Our beloved president had the nerve to say Katrine was handle poorly, please, look how he is handleing this! He is out campaining again, while the people of the east coast are in desitude!

To Everyone who wants the President to hold your hand & rub your back & kiss your a#s's should get off their own butts, stop your crying like children, & do SOMETHING to help yourselves or MAYBE SOMEONE ELSE!!! On no wait!! That would be productive and take effort. God forbid! Just keep b#tchin & cryin' & wait for NO ONE to save your selfish butts. Have a lovely lonely life!!!

Wires are down all over the island like stated above, Yes, LIVE , still feeding power to some while just on the other side of the mess no power. It is sad to see and hear people asking for a miracle, so sorry to say that there are no magic wands to fix a problem caused by Mother Nature!! However help is on the way! Power lineman are being flown in from all over to assist but keep in mind they are just men not miracle workers..!! Who only work so hard and for so long. Unfortunately for us Lipa was not in any way prepared for this type of storm and is trying to scramble crews to areas that are an easy fix first to prove to the public that they did what promised. Be patient, kind, and reach out to your neighbors and offer some assistance, most if all remember who you are Long Islanders!! Eventually you too will get your lives back to some kind of normal.
