Medford Man Convicted of Felony Assault

Prior crimes could lead to longer jail time.

A Medford man who was convicted Wednesday of felony assault in the second degree could be facing an extended sentence of 15 years to life for his past criminal history.

Lourriston Potter, 31 of Medford, was found guilty following a four-day trial in Riverhead, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota's office. State Supreme Court Justice William Condon heard the case of the alleged assault, which occurred on January 3, 2009.

During a dispute at a Central Islip sober home, located at 74 Willow Street, Potter allegedly beat Daniel Brennan with a wooden table leg, causing injuries to his head, face and neck. Following the altercation, Brennan was treated at Southside hospital.

According to the DA's office the normal sentence for felony assault is two-and-a-third to seven years. However due to prior convictions of drug possession and grand larceny, Potter is eligible for persistent felony offender status. As a result, the DA is requesting a sentence of 15 years to life for the Medford resident.

Potter was convicted of possession of a controlled substance and grand larceny in June 2000 and sentenced to two-and-a-half to five years said the DA's office. Potter was released on parole in December 2004.

Potter was sent back to prison after being convicted of criminal sale of a controlled substance in the third degree in December 2006. Sentenced to three years and six months, Potter was released on parole in October of 2008. He was still on parole when arrested for the 2009 assault, according to the DA's office.

Potter is scheduled to be sentenced on October 12.
