Mourners Gather Outside Medford Drug Store

Local residents descend on the site of Sunday's shooting to pay respects to the victims.

The day after an at a well-known Medford pharmacy rattled the community, many residents were still seeking answers as to why this horrific event took place in their hometown.

As police continue their hunt for the man suspected of shooting four people Sunday morning at Havens Drug store, a number of local residents gathered throughout the day Monday outside the store to pay their respects to the victims.

According to Suffolk County Police, the victims are drug store employees, Jennifer Mejia, 17, of East Patchogue; Raymond Ferguson, 45, of Centereach; and customers Bryon Sheffield, 71, of Medford and Jamie Taccetta, 33, of Farmingville.

Luis Gonzalez, a friend of the Mejia family, was among those who visited the growing memorial that now includes cards, small charms and bouquets of flowers.

"I was at the laundromat yesterday when I heard the news but I never imagined that it would be someone I knew,” Gonzalez said. “I knew the family for a very long time. I knew her father since before she was born. The family is just devastated.”

Resident Toni Harrell, who lives near the pharmacy and recently moved to Medford from North Bellport, said she was home asleep during the incident and is still shocked at the tragedy.

"We had stayed out late [Saturday night]. I woke up to screaming and crying from someone. When I looked out my window, I saw the cops. We didn't hear the shooting or anything," Harrell said.

Holbrook resident Andrea Pilchick stopped by the site after visiting family working nearby.

"I have been very upset about this all day. It's absolutely horrible. I was actually kind of scared to come down here but I had to," Pilchick said.

Jim Gubitosi, co-owner of the Medford Music House on Route 112, said he has been contemplating moving his business for sometime and because of the shooting is a bit more tempted to relocate.

"I think what happened yesterday was a terrible thing. Vinny [owner of the pharmacy] has been in Medford for about 30 years. He's a very nice guy and all the people that work for him are just great. It is a sin that something like this would happen. We are praying for all of them," Gubitosi said.

According to a sign posted on the front door of the drug store, Havens Drugs is closed until further notice.
