Fire causes significant damage to historic church.

A fire early Sunday morning damaged a historic Yaphank church, according to Suffolk Police. 

Police say a 911 call came in at 2:02 a.m. reporting a fire at Yaphank Presbyterian Church, which is located at 65 Main Street.

The investigation into the blaze has been hindered due to extensive damage to the church, but police say the cause of the fire "has been deemed non-criminal."

The church was built in 1851 and also served as a community center and refuge for residents seeking shelter, police said.
