The driver who allegedly drove under the influence of drugs and caused an eight-car accident in Sayville last Sunday evening is being held on $300,000 bond/$150,000 cash bail following arraignment on Thursday.
Patchogue resident Thomas Herman, 46, was arrested late day Sunday and charged with leaving the scene of the accident on West Main Street and driving while impaired by drugs.
According to police Herman was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer westbound and hit five cars before driving into the back of a Honda Accord and then head on into a eastbound Hyundai Elantra. The driver of the Elantra was declared dead at the scene and a female passenger suffered serious injuries.
Sayville Community Ambulance and fire department squads used the Jaws of Life equipment to help rescue both Herman and the occupants of the Elantra.
Herman was arraigned at Suffolk First District Court and is due back in court on January 23. No information regarding his attorney was available at press time.
