Pedestrian Critically Injured in Hit-and-Run Crash in Patchogue

A 24-year-old Patchogue man is fighting for his life after being struck by a car in Patchogue early Sunday morning. 

According to police, Walter Orlando Matute Penaranda was crossing Montauk Highway east of Bay Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene around 4:20 a.m. 

Penaranda was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery and was listed in critical condition.

The vehicle that hit Penaranda is described as a gray or silver two-door sedan with a rear spoiler, possibly an older model Honda.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed or has information on the crash to call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or anonymously Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

Montauk Highway in the area of the crash was closed until about 10 a.m. Sunday as police investigated.
